EGMS NEWSLETTER
NOVEMBER 2022
From the Desk of the Principal
Here at Grandview we strongly believe in two things: 1) Student learning and 2) Building a sense of community among our students and teachers. In order to accomplish these goals there are several things taking place at Grandview.
Student Learning:
We have a rigorous curriculum and great teachers. Students are held to a high standard when it comes to their achievement. Each and every student can achieve success and we believe it is our job to prepare them for success. If students struggle to understand important concepts we offer support in many ways. Teachers are always available before and after school to work with kids. Students who need high levels of support receive additional instruction in reading and math. We also offer Wolf Academy from 3:30pm-4:30pm for students who have fallen more than 3 assignments behind. All in the name of student learning!
Building a sense of community:
Our students and staff will be participating in numerous activities to connect our students to each other and the school as a whole.
• Red Ribbon Presentations for 6th and 7th graders will occur on November 9th. See the Counselor’s Corner page in this newsletter for more information.
• The Mitten Tree Project will be up and running in the office on November 21st in the afternoon. Please consider being a part of this great Holiday event by having your student pick up a "Mitten" and purchasing a holiday gift for a student in need. See the form attached to the newsletter. Thanks in advance for your generosity!
• Pride Awards - each quarter, two students from each grade are selected for demonstrating high levels of perseverance, respect, integrity, decision-making, and empathy.
• Kindness Coins - each quarter, up to 5 students from each grade are selected to receive an EGMS minted kindness coin. The idea is for kids to pass these coins on to others who demonstrate kindness.
The following awards are given out during specific grade level ceremonies to recognize students for exemplifying the pillars of PRIDE:
- 6th grade Starburst Awards - approximately once a month, 20 students are selected to receive a pack of Starbursts.
- 7th grade Rock Star Awards - approximately once a month, 20 students are selected to receive a package of Pop Rocks.
- 8th grade Candy Awards - approximately once a month, 20 students are selected to receive a special candy bar related to their recognition (ie: 3 Musketeers for working well with others).
We hope your kids are participating in and enjoying all of these activities.

Girls Basketball and Wrestling will both start in January 2023. If you have not registered your athlete for sports and paid their activity fee for the 2022-23 school year you need to take care of that ASAP. Athletes need to complete the rSchool registration and upload an electronic copy of their physical dated after 5/1/22, and pay the $35 activity fee. If you have paid for an activity pass this year your fee has already been paid. If you have played football, volleyball or boys basketball for EGMS this school year you have already completed this process and do not need to do anything further. Students who participated in Running Club will need to make sure they have paid the $35 activity fee, since that is not a requirement for Running Club.

8TH GRADE STUDENTS AND PARENTS
Mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 1, 2023 for Incoming 9th Grade Registration night at ENHS. All 8th graders and their parents will be invited to Elkhorn North High School Registration/Parent night on Wednesday, March 1 at 6:00 pm in the Elkhorn North High School auditorium.
It is helpful if all incoming 9th graders and their parents attend.
DISTRICT SPELLING BEE
All students had the opportunity to showcase their spelling skills during the past 2 weeks as the annual school-wide spelling bee was held in all language arts classes. The grade-level champions were named and the finalists from each grade competed on 11/27, in order to crown a 2022 Spelling Bee Champion of Grandview. CONGRATS to Morgan Lavin and Niharika Kandari for being the top 2 spellers and to Sraavya Dodapaneni for being the alternate. Morgan and Niharika will be representing EGMS at the District Spelling Bee on November 17th at 4:00 pm at the TTCC. Good luck, spellers!
PROGRESS REPORTS
Progress reports for 2nd and 4th quarter will be electronic. You will receive an email from the school requesting that you check your student's current standing in all of their classes via PowerSchool. All parents should have an active PowerSchool account. PowerSchool is a great tool for parents and we want to encourage everyone to check it regularly. In addition, your child is also able to check PowerSchool through their own password protected account. If you have any questions with your account, contact the office.
YEARBOOK PURCHASE
You still have time to purchase a 2022-2023 yearbook if you have not yet done so. Only those students who pre-order a yearbook now will receive one when they are distributed in May. To order a yearbook and pay on-line go to THIS LINK. You may also send a check for $35 made out to EGMS with your student to be dropped off in the office. The price for a yearbook will go up to $40 after Jan. 14, 2023.

EGMS WOLF PACK FUN RUN/WALK
EGMS BOOSTER CLUB NOTES
THANK YOU to the parents who volunteered to help at health screenings this month: Sarah Beth Balters, Whitney Feldick, Katie Horner, Karen Johnson, Shaini Carney, Missi Irfan, Trisha Troia, Janel Asuncion, Julie Jardine, Brandi Gufford, Angie Barth, and Renee Vokt. Your help was very much appreciated!
Holiday Hurrah!!
The Booster Club will again be giving Grandview families an opportunity to skip the shopping for teachers and staff and instead contribute to our Holiday Hurrah fund. 100% of the money collected will be divided among all EGMS staff members. This will make your lives easier and more importantly, ensure that EVERY staff member is recognized and thanked. Please be watching for specific information to come out around Thanksgiving.
SAFETY & SECURITY
All visitors are asked to enter the building through the front doors, located on the North side of the building. The South entrance is not a secured entrance and therefore we are not able to let visitors in through those doors.
When visitors do buzz the office, they will be asked to state their name and the purpose of their visit. The safety of our students is very important and we appreciate your patience when following these important protocols.
EGMS TWITTER AND FACEBOOK
We highly encourage families to follow us on Twitter @ElkhornPS_EGMS and Facebook @ElkhornPSEGMS. Several times a week we post information and pictures that tell our story. There are always great things happening and we love telling you about them!

LUNCH ACCOUNT REMINDERS
- When you send a check to school with your student to make a deposit in to their lunch account please include your student’s name and ID # on the memo line. If you are sending in cash to be deposited, please place in an envelope and label it with your student’s name and ID #. Thanks for your cooperation.
- If your child has a negative balance, Sodexo will send you email reminders to make a deposit into your child's account. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THESE EMAILS. Your middle school child is also reminded by the cashier that they are running low or are negative. Student's with negative balances are not denied a meal but they are denied a la carte items. Currently the district has about $6000 of negative student balances. Thank you. If you have any questions you may contact Sodexo at 402-289-0443 or Susan Desler at fssdesler@epsne.org.
EPS FALL WRITING ASSESSMENT
All 8th grade students at Grandview Middle School will participate in the Elkhorn Public Schools Fall Writing Assessment during the week of November 8th-12th. Teachers will use the results from the district assessment to determine each student's areas for growth in regards to the six traits of writing prior to the state assessment in the spring. Elkhorn consistently ranks toward the top in all areas of the state assessment, and we want that trend to continue. In order to ensure your kids have the most success, please make sure your child is getting plenty of rest and eating a good breakfast before they come to school.
BOARD ADMINISTRATOR RETREAT
On November 22, all district administrators will meet with the Board of Education from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. to discuss relevant topics to the district. The Board and administrators meet once in the fall and once in the spring each year.
