A Message from the Principal
Greetings,
I recently found myself in a conversation where a parent was sharing information they had seen on Avon Chatter regarding Bridges of Mathematics and students not receiving traditional letter grades. Someone was stating parents should think of Proficient as an “A”, Basic as a “B”, Below Basic as a “C” and Well Below Basic as a “D”. This is not correct if you compare the Avon grading scale found in the Parent Handbook with Bridges Assessments. In a recent building leadership team meeting, I asked our instructional coach to come up with a video explanation to help parents better understand. Kudos to Mrs. Kayla Kuepper for her efforts! I hope you find this beneficial and please feel free to contact your child’s teacher, Mrs. Kuepper or myself with any clarifying questions. I know this new way we are teaching conceptual math can sometimes be confusing to parents and much different than how we may have learned. However, the results are outstanding when I look at data over time and our students’ ability to persevere with tough problems and explain the “WHY” behind everything they learn in math.
Sincerely,
Nikki Harrison

A Message from Mrs. Kendall, Title 1/EL Teacher
Dear Families,
I wanted to take a moment to talk about the importance of attendance. Every day a student is absent is a lost opportunity for learning. In order to make the most impact with our students, we need them here as much as possible. As a Title 1 school, attendance is an important part of our plan. Did you know that 2 absences per month = less likely to graduate? Absences from school can also have a negative effect on your child’s grades and reading skills. As a parent, you can prepare your child for a lifetime of success by making regular school attendance a priority. If you would like additional information and/or resources on how you can help your child with attendance, you may visit this page http://absencesaddup.org/.
Thank you for all that you do!
Sincerely,
Yael Kendall
