What a beautiful final week of September we're having! I hope this finds you well. Here's the News for this week.
Attendance Priority and Resources
When it comes to attendance, every day matters. According to the Oregon Department of Education, more than one in six students in chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism means a student misses 10% or more school days. That’s about two days per month.
Regular attendance will help children do well in elementary school, secondary school, college and at work. According to the Attendance Works Organization, by 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of school. By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
Attendance habits are set early in the school year, so please build good attendance habits early. As a parent, you can help by establishing a regular bedtime and morning routine. You can also avoid medical appointments during school hours, as well as extended trips when school is in session. We will be sharing more helpful tips and information throughout the school year.

New Office Hours
Effective October 8, 2018 Raleigh Hills office hours are 8:00 AM-4:30 PM. All Late Start Elementary schools in the district will now have the same uniform hours.
Fall Harvest Celebrations
This year our classrooms will have Fall Harvest Celebrations on Tuesday afternoon, November 20. These celebrations will replace the previous Halloween Parties, which is something we have moved away from throughout the Beaverton School District. As a staff leadership team, we decided to have all classrooms K-8 have a common time and day for the celebrations and we determined that November 20 would be the best day. Part of the event will likely include a celebration of student learning, and teachers can provide more specific details for their classes.
Library News
Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) titles are available for kids to check out in the library. OBOB is a fun event where kids form teams, read a set of books, and answer questions about the books. Teams battle each other in a quiz style contest. OBOB is for students in grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. We will have our school wide battle in February. It's time to start forming teams and reading the books.
Book Fair is November 13-16, held in the library. We will have more information as it approaches.
I'm reading books by Jason Reynolds. These are fast paced 5th grade and up titles featuring sports, identity and overcoming obstacles. Some of his books are written in verse (as poetry), which means they are fast paced and have a lot of energy. Don't let that scare you off. Find them at the school, the public library, or bookstore--even Target.
