Greeting Shaw Community!

We are busily getting the school ready to welcome back our students for an in person start on Thursday, August 5th. We cannot wait to be back in community with everyone!

This summer our Governing Board approved a position for a Garden Coordinator at Shaw. Mr. James Moench has accepted this position. We are very excited about the possibilities that this position will bring to all of our students. James will take charge of all things garden at Shaw as well as special projects with our students including the planning and completion of our “Pollinator’s Garden” that will be located in front of the school.

Our Back to School Night will be held on Tuesday, August 3rd, primary (3-6) at 4:00, lower elementary (6-9) at 5:00, upper elementary (9-12) at 6:00 and middle school (12-14) at 4:00. The meetings will be held in your child’s classroom. Class lists and maps will be posted at the main entrance to the office. Our PTA, transportation department, a few afterschool enrichment vendors and PEER will be available in the cafeteria. Our special area teachers, Mr. Bonds, Ms. Ketchum and Coach Wilfert will also be here that evening in their classrooms should you wish to visit with them.

We have filled our last teaching vacancy for lower elementary (Ms. Silver). Miss Susan Cruz has accepted the position. She will be assisted by Ms. Gina Ramirez and Ms. Jennifer Collier. Many of you will know Ms. Cruz as she has been a substitute at Shaw for the last couple of years. Prior to her retirement in 2019 from a school in Arizona, Miss Cruz taught Montessori in the Philippines, Canada and New York. She has over 40 years of experience. We are so grateful to have such a skilled Montessorian joining our teaching team!

As I write, we do not yet have an update on our district mitigation plan. I know that you may have many unanswered questions. I will get updated information to you soon as it is released.

Wishing you the very best!

Principal Engdall

Shaw Garden Coordinator

Big picture

Greetings Shaw Community! I’m proud to say that I will be the garden site manager for the 2021/2022 school year. I have 8 years in primary and secondary education. That includes two years teaching ESL in South China. I have taught everything from math to fine arts, but my favorite subject is horticulture. I have worked with farmers, horticulturists, master gardeners and landscape architects on several school garden programs. I’m excited to teach the Shaw students about sustainable agriculture, pollination, composting, native plants and hydrology. It will be a fun and fruitful school year. I can’t wait to meet everyone! James Moench

Shaw PTA

Big picture

Hi everyone!

I haven’t seen you for a while. Where have you all been?

It’s hard to believe that after a year and a half, our school will be buzzing once again with all our kiddos! Can you believe that some of our kids haven’t been on campus since Spring Break 2020? And with all of the uncertainty that was the past 2 years, the Shaw Montessori PTA was able to continue supporting our teachers by helping them get the much needed classroom supplies that made for a safer environment for our in person learners and an easier time for our at home learners.

And we couldn’t have done it without you.

The key for this year is COMMUNITY. There is still so much uncertainty in the air with new teachers, new classrooms, and new ways of doing things. But one thing always stays the same – the magic of our school lies with the people who come together for our children – our community.

This community built a beautiful outdoor environment for our littles to learn and grow. This community built a garden out of unused space so elementary students can sit and munch on the vegetables they grew themselves. This community planted trees, created a meditation garden and built a sun dial to provide for the well-being of our children’s bodies, hearts and minds.

And we are going to do it again.

This year is more important than ever to join the PTA. You have supported your PTA over the years and this year, we want to support you. We have some exciting events planned including a back to school clothing swap, Bingo night, and (of course) the return of the Fun Run!

And even though our entire community won’t be back together until the last group of Pre-K’s arrive September 20th, we need to build this new community and make it the strongest one yet.

So, Become a PTA member. Attend the meetings (they are 1 hour, I promise). Play Bingo with us. Trade your kid’s small clothes for some that fit (I swear I just bought my Kinder 5 “new” pair of shorts! Why doesn’t anything fit him anymore?)

And as an incentive, the three teachers (one from Primary, one from Lower Elementary, and one from Upper El/Middle school) whose classes have the highest percentage of PTA Member Signups before our first meeting (6PM on August 18th) will receive an extra $100 to spend on their classroom.

You can get the ball rolling for your teacher(s) right now by becoming a Shaw Montessori PTA member. Each membership is $10 (plus something like .85 for processing if you do it via credit card). The membership is good for a household (one address) and allows you one vote at the PTA meetings. Parents, Grandparents, Teachers, Administrators, Caregivers and community members can all sign up as PTA members and play a part in growing and improving our school.

To sign up, go to: or we will be taking in-person membership signups at Back to school night and at the PTA meeting.

This community built this school. And together, we make it stronger!
