Message From Mrs. El-Amin & Ms. Riddle
Hello TLA Families!
Cheers to another great week of learning... and breakfast! This week we celebrated National School Breakfast Week. Each day our kitchen staff treated our scholars to fun and new breakfast items to explore. They went above and beyond with tasty recipes and an exciting display. A record number of scholars ate breakfast this week. Please continue to encourage your scholars to eat a balanced and filling breakfast to kick start there day and get their brains off and running! Enjoy your weekend.
Now, let's go be great.

Cursive Instruction
3rd grade scholars are receiving daily cursive instruction. They are making fabulous growth in their cursive skills. TLA believes this is an important skill and will continue to teach cursive in 3rd grade every year.
Reading Brought to Life
Scholars in 3rd grade learned how to write a summary while they were reading a story about taekwondo. They also got to have a little fun while learning a few moves.
Exams and Mental Health
As we prepare for state testing, it is important to recognize that this can indeed be a source of
added stress for scholars. Tests can naturally be stressful, but the added focus and attention
that comes with state testing can create an even greater sense of pressure. As a school, we
want to do our best to help support our scholars who might be experiencing some test anxiety
by giving some suggestions to our families on things they can do at home that can help. Here
are a few helpful tips for supporting your scholar:
1) In any stressful situation, whether it be in competition, at work, or with tests, deep
breathing is a great way to help calm one’s nerves. Remind your child to visualize
something that is calming to them, and then practice taking slow deep breaths. A great
strategy to help with this is called 5 Finger Breathing. Scholars start at the base of their
thumb and trace a finger up while inhaling, then slowly trace down their thumb while
exhaling. Then move on to your fingers, repeating the breathing pattern. See the images
below to help!
2) Another strategy you could talk about at home is what educational psychologist Dr.
Michele Borba calls the 1+3+10 Strategy. Dr. Borba teaches students that when they feel
like they are getting tense, they should 1 stop and tell themselves: “Be calm,” then take 3
deep slow breaths, then count slowly to 10.
3) Don’t underestimate a good night's rest. The simple reminder to get to bed a little earlier
the night before can do a lot of good to help reduce one’s stress level.
4) Remind your child that feeling anxious is normal! Anytime in life when we have
something important on the horizon it is normal for us to feel nervous about it.
Sometimes students can compound their anxiety if they think that feeling nervous is
abnormal.
Perhaps the most important thing to remind your child is that once that test starts, just “try
their best and forget the rest!” It can be helpful to remind them that the primary function of
state tests is to give feedback to their teachers and school. State tests help us determine what
areas we can continue to improve in our instruction, as well as help us identify the learning
needs of individual scholars.

Culture Connections
Mr. Anderson's Message
This month we are learning the virtue of HONESTY. “Honesty is living truthfully in your words, actions, and thoughts.” Telling the truth takes a lot of courage, especially when a child is afraid of punishment. When your scholar comes to you with the truth, please reward them with praise. This reaction will help your scholar feel great about their honesty, particularly in situations where a lie would have been easier. Thank you TLA families for helping teach our scholars about HONESTY.
Mr. Cieplewski's Message
This Monday we start the R.O.A.R. system. R.O.A.R. stands for Responsible, On task, Accountable and Respectful. We have created an individual reward system for every scholar that is following the high expectations that TLA has set. 6th-10th grade scholars will receive a lanyard and a punch card on Monday. Scholars will earn R.O.A.R. punches in which they may exchange for items from Mr. Cieplewski (every Thursday). Our scholars have come up with great ideas for items in the shop and the 300 punch “big prize”!!
Attendance Goal
When Should My Child Stay Home from School?
We know that there are days when children don’t always feel their best. Sometimes it can be tough to know when to keep your child home from school or not, so here are some helpful guidelines.
If you have questions or concerns about your child’s attendance, we are here to help! Please reach out to the School Social Worker, Mrs. Nitz, at (608) 690-5158 or jennifer.nitz@tlabeloit.com
Career Chat with Ms. Benisch
STEAM Field Trip
Our Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) field trip, that was canceled due to snow, was rescheduled this week. Middle and high school scholars interested in STEAM visited Beloit College's Center for Entrepreneurship. They were give a tour of the building and then tasked with working in teams to problem solve, engineer, and design. One task was to develop a game that they could market to families, if they lost electricity. Each group was given a gallon size bag of supplies and had five minutes to engineer a game.
Business Challenge
Six high school scholars participated in the Junior Achievement Titans Business Challenge this week. Scholars competed with students from around Rock County. Teams were tasked with running a simulated company in the mobile phone industry, with success depending on production, pricing, marketing, research and development decisions. Scholars worked together to strategize what step to take next. These scholars are looking forward to competing again next year.
Healthcare Month-March
This month our career focus is Healthcare. Scholars interested in healthcare participated in a career panel last week. The learned about medical imagining and working in a lab. Scholars had the opportunity to learn about the different careers in healthcare and ask questions about what the representative does. Once of the representatives was a student at Blackhawk Technical College graduating this year. Scholars were surprised that she already has a job lined up at Beloit Health Systems.
Congratulations Ms. Benisch
TLA is proud to announce that Ms. Benisch, Director of Career Planning and Partnerships, won the Wisconsin Technology Educations Association Special Recognition award at this year's conference.
