Middle School Moments
April 16, 2020
From the Desk of Mrs. McCoy, Principal
COVID-19 and a tornado–wow! BUT GOD...
We have much to celebrate as an SBA family. Even in the destruction all around us, our families and community have rallied around each other. It has been a blessing to see and hear. Every day as I speak with some of you, my heart swells and my eyes 'sweat'.
In my devotions this morning I went to two different places and the scripture was the same so I am listening to God's Word today.
"The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised."
Psalms 18:2,3
Praise HIM with me today as we celebrate His provision and protection this week.
I also want to celebrate our Drama students who are not getting to have their play this week. They worked hard for several months so look at these names and say a prayer for their broken hearts. I am trusting God with Mrs. Rayburn, our Fine Arts Director, and with Mrs. Crews, our Drama teacher, that we can find a way for this to happen–eventually.
I love and miss you ALL.

Return to Online Learning
We are planning to return to online learning Monday, April 20th. More information will be coming later this week related to modifications to assignment due dates for those affected by Sunday's storms. Parents, see your email for more. We are all in this together!
Silverdale Center Updates
The latest developments on The Silverdale Center project can now be found online at www.silverdaleba.org/silverdalecenter, where you can even watch two realtime construction cameras! After hours or on the weekend? No problem - just choose a date from the sidebar or watch the timelapse!
Dollywood Credit for any Pre-Ordered Adult Tickets
With the unfortunate cancellation of our upcoming Dollywood trip, we will be issuing refunds for the parent tickets purchased. The pre-paid ticket cost will be returned as a credit via your student account. These will be posted within the next week and can be viewed by logging into your parent portal (FACTS) account.

Student Assistance Program
This is a friendly reminder that in these uncertain times the student assistance program is still very much available for all students. Right now, we can still do in-person visits in our Chattanooga office, or we can do phone sessions. If you would like for us to see or speak with your child, please fill out the SAP Parent Permission Form. You can also call our Dalton office at 706-272-6558 to make an appointment.
These can be very anxious times. Remember to reassure your child that God is bigger than this virus. Joshua 1:9 says to “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
A Message From Nurse Anne
As your school nurse, I want you to know I am praying for you and your families and looking into ways that we can best help our neighbors safely in order to prevent further spread of COVID-19.
Remember,
- Wear personal protective equipment (PPE)--mask & gloves.
- Maintain 6+ feet away from others.
- If you are around other people, make sure you shower when you get home and remove any clothing you may have been wearing and immediately throw them in the washing machine to be cleaned.
- Wash your hands with soap and water frequently (use hand sanitizer if soap and water are unavailable).
- "People who may be infected by the coronavirus should continue to self-isolate as much as possible, and those who have been displaced — whether they are positive, pending test results or not — and are living with others should limit exposure to as few new household contacts as possible."
After storms, the risk of injury is high while working to clean up. Tetanus is a potential health threat for people who have open wounds. If you experience a cut or puncture wound, you should:
- Clean it with soap and water.
- Consult your healthcare provider. (Due to pandemic, I would recommend calling to see if telehealth is an option.)
- If it is an emergency, call 911 for immediate assistance.
- Due to risk of COVID-19 exposure, the Red Cross has placed people in need of shelter in hotels rather than establishing group shelters.
- COVID-19 task force is still meeting regularly to plan and respond to pandemic.
- Chattanooga first responders continue to respond to the hardest-hit areas of our city
Some encouragement:
Rae Bond, CEO of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Medical Society said, "An immediate threat to life requires an immediate response. Our emergency management team is well trained and well equipped to lead us through this emergency. It will be challenging to deal with two completely different emergencies at the same time, but they are trained to do that. Our community will be juggling resources for the next few days, and obviously getting power back online for people and getting power lines off roads has to be a priority."

Coronavirus Information
Can someone spread the virus without being sick?
People are thought to be most contagious when they are most symptomatic (the sickest).
Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this occurring with this new coronavirus, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
Can virus spread from contact with a contaminated surface?
It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. COVID-19 can live on surfaces up to 3 days so it is very important to practice good hand hygiene, cough etiquette, cleaning, and disinfecting.
How easily does the virus spread?
How easily a virus spreads from person-to-person can vary. Some viruses are highly contagious (spread easily), like measles, while other viruses do not spread as easily. Another factor is whether the spread is sustained, spreading continually without stopping.
The virus that causes COVID-19 seems to be spreading easily and sustainably in the community (“community spread”) in some affected geographic areas. (Community spread means people have been infected with the virus in an area, including some who are not sure how or where they became infected.)
Dear Parents,
I hope that all is well with you and your family.
I wanted to let you know that as of Thursday, April 2nd, the Independent School Conference has canceled its spring season of athletics. That includes Elementary and Middle School Track, Baseball, Volleyball, and Golf. If there are any questions that need an immediate response, please email the athletic department for the most timely response.
These are uncharted waters for all of us, so let's keep each other in our prayers. Give your kids a hug for me. I miss seeing them very much.
Tim Thompson
Elementary & Middle School Athletic Director
