MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LAMBERT
Dear Mariano Castro Parents,
There are four weeks left in this school year, filled with many learning and fun activities. Please keep your child focused on their school activities and on following the schoolwide behavior expectations.
Construction Update: The work on the construction of the new school continues on schedule and will open in August 2018. In addition the 16 classrooms in the four wings will be modernized this summer and will reopen in August 2017. These rooms are receiving new flooring, new electrical, new technology, and new paint.
We are very excited about the upgrades to the learning environment!

Dress Code
Research has found a high correlation between the way children dress and their behavior in school. Students are to dress appropriately for participation and safety in a variety of school activities. Personal cleanliness and neatness are expected. We understand that at times, it may be difficult because of current style and trends, but the dress code contributes to an orderly and focused learning environment. A dress code also helps students develop standards for their personal appearance.
Appropriate Attire
Please consider that our students are young and many of the current fashion trends are geared to teenagers who have a different maturity level and a different perspective on life. We want our students to be children, not smaller replicas of their teenage siblings.
- Above all, consider comfort and the ability to run and play.
- Students need a sweater, sweatshirt or jacket for cooler weather.
- Make sure that first/last name and room number are somewhere on the label of outerwear.
Inappropriate Attire
- Tank tops with thin (less than one inch) straps. No strapless or spaghetti strap type tops.
- No “basketball” or muscle man tee shirts unless under another shirt.
- Skirts shorter than mid-thigh.
- Pants with waistbands not worn at waist. A belt must be worn if pants cannot stay at/above hips.
- Backless sandals, flip-flops, or shoes with no backs. Shoes must be attached to feet and suitable for running. This is a safety feature.
- Too short shorts. Shorts must be at fingertip length when arms are held at sides.
- See-through, fishnet blouses/shirts or bare midriffs (tops must meet whatever is worn on the bottom, covering torso); no off-shoulder tops.
- Clothing with offensive pictures or writing. These include reference to drugs, alcohol, skeletons, certain nationalities, religions and violence.
- Swim/beachwear and exercise wear.
- Hats, caps and sunglasses inside classrooms or buildings (unless there is a medical reason).
- Holes, rips or tears in clothing.
- Makeup should not be worn to school. Save something for middle school!
- No visible tattoos of any kind.
- Chains of any kind and clothing or jewelry with protrusions that could be considered dangerous.
Students who come to school wearing inappropriate clothing will be asked to contact a parent to bring a change of clothing to school. The school principal and/or classroom teacher will determine appropriate school dress.

Join the conversation! Ideas exchange about elementary school boundaries
MVWSD is in the midst of a community-wide process to make adjustments to elementary school boundaries intended to relieve overcrowding at some schools and provide for the opening of Slater Elementary in 2019-20.
The Student Attendance Areas Task Force has been reviewing District demographic data and working to produce boundary scenarios. The goal is for the Board of Trustees to consider two boundary options on June 1, 2017 and approve one of them on June 15, 2017.
You should have an email from ShareYourThoughts@mvwsd.org asking you to participate in an online exchange of ideas about boundaries. The thoughts and comments you provide will be used by the task force and the Board to inform the final boundaries choice.
Please see www.mvwsd.org/boundaries to learn more about how the survey works and to review boundary Options A and B that you will be asked about. If you did not receive an email, you can sign up at this link to participate.
