Nuts & Bolts

October 8, 2018

Thank You

Thank you for holding down the fort at school Friday to allow most of us on the support team to attend the UMC Administrator's Retreat and Fall Conference in Cedar City. It was so nice being with other Montessori leaders and hear stories that affirm and confirm that we are not alone in our struggles. Others Montessori schools have screamers, runners, and other behavior struggles. They also have beautiful classrooms, stories of success, and words of wisdom to share. We have some great ideas and strategies to share with you all.

It is apparent that most staff members appreciated and maybe even enjoyed our professional learning about observation. I have seen some of you all try new classroom configurations and we have loved the conversations happening around this topic. Continue to observe your classroom and reflect on your practices, your classroom environment, and your students.

Have a beautiful week!

Please welcome Ms. April, who joined the MMA staff this past week. She is working with Jill and would appreciate your words of welcome.

Fall Festival from MAPA

MAPA is pretty excited (and going bonkers) for Fall Festival this Friday! I hope you will be able to join all the fun. Thank you for all of your help over the past few weeks. Sending out flyers, sending your students to find out about booths, helping with different projects, posting all of our needs. It all helps so much and is all really coming together.

I have just a couple more things for you all before next week.

  • We have one more round of flyers going out tomorrow. I will have them in teachers boxes in the morning.
  • We will begin setting up next Friday at 12 pm. We will be having food trucks set up in the parking lot so if you could either park at North Shore that morning or move your car around lunch we would greatly appreciate it.
  • We would like to get Rene some help with the dunk tank. If you are willing to sign up to take a turn here is the schedule. I created 15 minutes slots so no one is stuck but you are welcome to take more than 1. This year it will be a ticket required event, so hopefully you won't end up in the water too many times...

If you have any questions please let me know!

Cheers,

Angela Voraotsady

Parent Teacher Conferences

I neglected to mention PTCs in the last N&B. Ideally, sign-ups should be up on your blogs and advertised to parent 2 or more weeks before the conferences. Thank you to those of you who knew and did this without a reminder. If you have not already posted parent/guardian sign-ups, please do so and contact parents by this Wednesday. You must use Track It Forward and not Join.me. You can copy your PTCs from last year's Track it Forward for this year. If you have questions regarding how to use this online system, ask three colleagues before emailing MAPA.

Cross Country Championships

Our JH cross country teams competed last week and represented MMA well! We are so proud of them all. MMA's girls team took second in the region with two girls placing in the top ten. One of our boy placed in the top ten in the region.

Cultural festival projects need to be related to the United States. Families will be invited to school on the 13th from 2-4pm and teachers are expected to be present and supervise.

Montessori Mondays

Montessori Monday is cancelled for October, which is this Monday the 8th as we are doing substitute training on this day.

Evacuation Drill Wednesday!

Field Trips - Attendance

When your class schedules a field trip, please make sure you call the office to tell them who is absent and present. You need to call the office either way.

Student Concerns

If a traumatic experience has happened directly in the life of a student or their immediate family, please email the support staff ASAP.

Counseling Referrals Protocol

Thank you for being observant and reporting your concerns via a counseling referral form when you see a child is struggling socially or emotionally. If you have submitted a student counseling referral, have not heard from Andrea within two weeks, and desire and update - please email Ms. Andrea a brief summary and ask for an update. If the situation has changed and/or your concern has escalated, please email Andrea and inform her that it is urgent and provide more details.

As always, if a child is self-harming, discussing self-harm (including suicide), or you suspect that the child is not safe at home or anywhere outside of school - contact Andrea immediately by calling her office or coming to the office and asking the office staff to contact Andrea. If Andrea is not available, you must immediately tell Lana or René in-person about the situation.

Student Privacy Over the Air

When you call for support on the walkie-talkie, please protect the child's privacy by not using their name. State the student's first initial and teacher if it is necessary to refer to a specific child on the walkie.

Missing

Ms. Julias large teal laundry basket of COLORED WIFFLE balls is still missing from the PE equipment closet in the Addition area. If you have seen them or know where they are, please return them or discuss with Ms. Julia.

Common Spaces G&C

Please remember that common areas are utilized by our entire school (students, parents, teachers) and these spaces should be restored at the end of meetings/events. Everyone is responsible to restore the environment; it is part of our community and commitment to each other.

Copy Paper Plea

We have blown through copy paper this year thus far and much faster than last year - according to our order histories. Please remember to conserve paper and try alternatives to paper - such as using whiteboards for practice or having a class set of questions in sheet protectors (to use each subsequent year) and ask students to write their answers/math problems in complete sentences on their own paper or in their journals.

Apology

Please accept our apologies that the curriculum office and work space was closed Friday afternoon. The smell of gas was present in that area that was handled expediently.

Pizza Friday

Our first Pizza Friday will be this Friday, October 12th. The pizzas are from Pizza Hut. The pizza prices will remain the same and the pieces should be larger as the pizzas are larger. The order forms and details will go out to parents in the MMM on Monday.
