ROCKET NEWS
December 2017
Our Read-A-Thon will end on Tuesday, December 5, 2017. Students will read for more than 200 minutes in school and raise money online to purchase books and other reading resources. Last year we raised $7,620. If we beat that goal this year, Ms. Young, Mrs. DeWeese, and Mrs. Nelson-Tracey will get pies in the face from the top earners in each grade!
Show your Woodholme school pride by purchasing a Woodholme T-Shirt. We still have shirts available in youth small, youth medium, youth large, and youth x-large. Each shirt is on sale for $12 cash or money order, payment is given to Mrs. Hurd. Get your shirt soon before your size is gone! Click on the order form here.
Updated Vision
Our school vision was written in 2005, and we are in the process of updating it. At Back-to-School Night parents were given the opportunity provide ideas on what they would like to see in the updated vision. We will discuss the vision at the PTA meeting on December 7th at 6:00 PM. Feel free to send in a note or email your ideas to wes0311@bcps.org
All ESOL students in grades K - 5 will take an English (WIDA) exam in January / February. They will be tested in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Reports of results will not be available until the end of May.
Lost & Found
Woodholme’s Lost & Found is overflowing with unlabeled and unclaimed sweaters, jackets, coats, hats, etc! Please come and visit to claim your missing items! All unclaimed items will be donated to a clothing closet over winter break.
Nurse's Nook
It’s not too late to get your flu shot! All students should have a change of clothing at school - food and outdoor slips happen. Be sure to bring any medications and medication orders that your child needs. As we approach the holidays stay healthy: eat healthy, exercise, get fresh air, and get enough sleep!
Early Dismissal
With the cold season, it's time to plan for inclement weather and school. In the event that schools close early due to weather, all children should be aware of how they are to dismiss. Any changes to normal dismissal procedures must be put in writing to your child's teacher. For late openings, early outs or closings, watch or read TV or social media for any BCPS delays, dismissals or closings.
Please view the December calendar for information on upcoming events at Woodholme! We are excited to continue our Read-A-Thon and hoping to hit our goal of $10.000! And come join us for the PTA meeting on Thursday, December 7th at 6 PM in the library! All are welcome to attend, and it's not too late to join the PTA to show your support of the school and families!
A Note From the Principal
Dear Families,
What a busy month November was for us! We appreciated all of the parents, grandparents and family members who visited us during American Education week. It was a great chance for teachers to showcase student achievement at Woodholme and to show what students are learning and doing at school, so thank you to all who were able to join us! As always, we remain thankful for the support from our families. Teachers are working extremely hard to plan and provide engaging and meaningful academic instruction, so parent support and collaboration is crucial and appreciated. We are also grateful to the parents who met with teachers for Parent-Teacher conferences this month. Students are more successful when their parents take an active role in their learning, so thanks to those parents and guardians who partnered with teachers to discuss student progress. It's not too late if you were unable to meet with your child's teachers. Email or call teachers to set up a date/time to discuss your child's progress and how you can help your child be more successful. Thanks for working together!
December brings a close to our 5th annual Read-A-Thon! Students, teachers and administrators have been reading, reading, reading in order to practice reading skills while raising funds to use towards classroom reading books and materials. This year the students and teachers would like to exceed last year's amount raised, and if we pass last year's total, all three administrators have agreed to let the top student fundraiser in each grade level toss a pie in our faces! It'll be a "sweet" activity since we'd love to see the students and teachers get so many more books and materials for the classroom. Once the Read-a-Thon ends we'll look at the amounts raised, and the top earner for each grade level will then be announced.
Enjoy the exciting month of December, and we wish all of our Woodholme families peace and relaxation with family and friends for the upcoming holidays this month!
Sincerely,
Principal Young
