We have had a busy start to Term 3. Last Friday senior students who were interested in the Trades Academy at Gisborne EIT visited and discovered options for their 2022 schooling year. This week Year 13 students who are interested in tertiary studies will be visiting Wellington to look at a variety of options. Some of our Year 7 and 8 students participated in the Aurora Gifted and Talented day and they have all been planning for Adrenaline Week next term. Our school has also been preparing for the Kapa Haka Festival. Our Year 11 Sport Science class also went skiing as part of their course. They had a fantastic time. A special thanks goes to Sarah Martin who helped on the trip and Mr Joe McGregor who organised the trip.

Our Year 10 students have been sitting Level 1 standards. It is important to encourage your children to make the most of these opportunities so they are better prepared for NCEA next year.

Senior School Derived Examinations will be held Week 9 this term and Year 7-10 PAT assessments will take place Week 10. We are looking forward to seeing the progress students have made this year.

Just a reminder that although we have no community Covid-19 cases in New Zealand, we must not become complacent and therefore we must adhere to key health measures including:

• Good hand hygiene and cough and sneeze etiquette

• Staying away if sick

• Displaying QR code posters at our entrances and encouraging all of our community to download the NZ COVID Tracer App and use it if they come onsite

We know all these things will help to keep our community as safe as possible.

I would like to remind whanau that if you have a child going to attend Wairoa College in 2022 can you please complete the enrolment form. These are available through our school office. We will be starting our visits to schools soon to collect information about your child's learning. If we have your enrollment form this makes the process much easier and it enables us to support your child best when they come to college. If we know they are coming we can also make class placements thoughtfully.

Senior students will start making subject selection choices for next year starting in Week 7 this Term. A lot of thought has to go into these decisions so please encourage your child/ren to investigate areas of interest. Whanau teachers, deans and the careers team have been focusing on pathways over the last few weeks using My Mahi as a platform.

Changes and Challenges – Huringa me nga wero. The concept of this unit is Hauora. We have implement 6 Hauora workshops based around our Changes and challenges that will cover components of

• Bullying
• Mindfulness and Growth Mindset
• Healthy eating
• Te Wahre Tapawha
• Cyber safety
• Aumangea – Resilience / Confidence & Self-esteem.

Pa te hau is a High-intensity interval training (HIIT). N3 and N4 have trialled this new programme since the beginning of Term 2. Pa te hau involves a small number of repeated brief, intense bouts of exercise, typically lasting from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. The HIIT programme also incorporates Mātauranga Māori which underpins many of the sessions, and there are links to curriculum. Nga Purakau – Myths and legends lead into the exercises and depicts how Tane separated his parents. Each student has a heart monitor and can see their heart rate on the screen.

This year two of the leadership initiatives Wairoa College has been involved with are the Wairoa Young Achievers Trust run by EIT Institute of Sport and Health and the Aurora leadership program.

The Wairoa Young Achievers Trust is a program that encompasses a period of testing using our 4 key values of Manakitanga, Kotahitanga, Aumangea, and Whakamana. The program is run in Hastings at the Hawkes Bay Community fitness. The main Tutor of the Program is Matua Raun Makirere Haerewa, who is fantastic with our students. Matua Raun takes the students through a whole array of leadership skills, fitness skills both practical and theory as well as moving into the mara kai Initiative with the students preparing and looking at planting according to the Maramataka Maori. We have 33 young leaders and they all have all enjoyed every aspect of the course.

Year 9 students will be busy this term with understanding the concept of Manaakitanga, involvement in sports activities and a trip at the end of the term. Manaakitanga is one of our school values and for Year 9, this will be the overarching focus inside and outside the classroom as we move forward into Term 3. We had our Senior Student Leaders present this at our first whole school assembly and we have embraced this in our weekly Year 9 Whanau class assemblies; students who demonstrate on a daily basis, that they are a caring, respectful, and supportive student of Wairoa College. I must congratulate the Year 9 student leaders for organizing and leading our assemblies every Thursday. There are a number of sports for Year 9 students in Term 3 and I praise the students for stepping up and showing commitment once again for the 29th CACTUS group. The cross-curricular theme for this term is Transport and near the end of the term, all Year 9 students will be travelling to Gisborne to the East Coast Museum and Tairawhiti Museum.

In our Year 10 group we currently have about 86 students. Our focus as a group for this term is bringing the presentation of our uniform to standard we can be proud of and having our attendance above 85%. We currently have a Deans meeting every Thursday where expectations are communicated and we have some fun such as playing basketball. A Year 10 leaders meeting on Tuesdays is also held for discussing and organising things in our year group. Sarah Bird from Sport Hawke’s Bay came in and spoke to our students about different career opportunities in sport. We will have another guest speaker from EIT coming in soon. On the 26thof August the Year 10s will be having their Olympics Day as part of their cross-curricular learning which is run by the Mathematics Department and will feature various activities throughout the day.

The focus for all Year 11 students this term has been completing internal assessments, attendance to school and wearing of correct school uniform. It has been a pleasure to see that 8 students have already gained NCEA Level 1 with some students almost nearing their 80 credits. Special mention must be made to 4 students who have Merit endorsements. A large group of students are currently sitting between 50- -70 credits and are working very hard to get their NCEA Level 1. I have been very grateful for our 4 Year 11 whanau teachers who have been a wonderful asset and support throughout the year by checking on their student’s attendance and uniform and making regular contact home to whanau. Mrs Rose Clarke has been a huge help with the Year 11s by tracking each individual students progress for NCEA each week. Mrs Ngaire Beagley-Dean and Mr Hemi Karauria have visited our level assemblies and spoke about career pathways for Tertiary/Gateway programs and Services Academy. Mr Toby Taylor has continued to take a group of 10 students out every Thursday to the Swann family farm for Agriculture. A group of 14 students have also been part of the Puhoro Stem program since last year which focuses on getting more students interested in taking up Science as a future career pathway or at University. I had the privilege of escorting these students down to Taradale last term to one of their wananga (workshops) and saw so much benefits this program has for our students. It was great to see a large number of Year 11 students having a balance in their lives and taking up winter sports representing Wairoa College in rugby, netball, basketball and badminton. I look forward to continuing to follow all Year 11 students progress for the remainder of the year. Well done to each and every one of you that strive to work hard and do their best.

The Year 12 students at Wairoa College continue to work towards achieving their Level 2 NCEA credits during Term 3, 2021. As a cohort these students have continued to develop into good young men and women that contribute to the wider Wairoa community. Term 3’s focus centers around the accumulation of Level 2 Credits. It is pleasing to note that all students at Level 2 understand the importance of continuing to track and monitor their academic progress in partnership with academic and pastoral teaching staff. I recently had the opportunity to observe the following students during Gateway placements at EIT in Gisborne; Kamryn Down, Nikki Winiata, Quentin Clark, Phillipa Mason, Maraea Hutchins, Rhythm Chime Jury and Lexus Te Kahu Brown. It is always pleasing to witness students involved in what they are passionate about. I wish our Year 12’s all the best as they strive to achieve personal excellence.

At the moment we have a group of 32 Year 13 students. We meet as a group every Thursday to keep in touch. This term will be a busy one as students strive for a pass in NCEA Level 3. Teachers and students are working very hard. Congratulations to those that have already achieved Level 3.

At present many Year 13s are considering options for their future. They have been involved in careers conversations with one of the Careers Team. Students are making decisions around whether they will take up further training at University and Polytech, and what and where they will study. Those considering University study have been invited to take a tertiary trip to Wellington and Palmerston North to explore tertiary campuses there.

We also have a group of students that have been out exploring the world of work by spending time working at farms and local businesses etc. This may help in deciding their future pathways.

Prefects are working on designs for Leavers Hoodies which will be able to be ordered soon. A leavers magazine is also being planned

On the 1st of August, The Year 11 SPS 101 class accompanied by Mr Joe McGregor and Mrs Sarah Martin travelled to Mt Ruapehu for a snowboarding trip. There was a lot of excitement as we drove up the mountain and saw the snow. Snow ball fights was the main activity for the first day as we walked up to Te Horonuku lodge. The next day we got a lesson in the morning then had the whole afternoon of free snowboarding. All the students snowboarding skills improved so much throughout the day with some students going all the way to the top of the mountain by the end of it. It was a fun day had by all and an experience that they will remember for a long time. The students represented the school extremely well for the entire trip. We would like to thank acting HOD Gareth Waldron, Principle Jo Vennell and the Board of Trustees for making this possible, and Sharon from Te Horonuku lodge for her hospitality and making sure everything ran smoothly.

Wairoa College BOT By-Election

Nominations closed on Friday the 30th of July for the current BOT By-Election.

Four valid nominations were received for the three vacant positions, an election will be held.

The Yr 9/10 team play at Hastings Sports Park every Saturday against Hastings and Napier teams. This week they faced Woodford House. It was an awesome defensive game where the team kept their opponents scoreless for 2 quarters. Final score was 23-6.

Our coach hada couple of players play out of their position just to change things up and they adapted well. The team currently sit at the top of the table. They face Hastings Girls on Saturday 21 August 2021 in the final match of the competition round and hope to make the Finals.
