Emmanuel Catholic College
College Newsletter - Term Two Week 9 - 23 June 2017
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Students and College Community,
We are now quickly coming to the end of Semester One with only next week remaining. Students in Years 10, 11 & 12 will have received their Semester Reports, and teachers are now finalising the Semester Reports for our younger students to be distributed electronically next week. These Reports are so important for students, in all year groups, to reset their academic goals to improve on their Semester One results. It is my expectation that all students aim to improve their academic standing in the second half of the year.
Early in Term Three, seven of our Year 11 students with three of our staff are travelling to Ngalangangpum School, Warmun to experience the College’s second Immersion Experience. As a school community, we are supporting our group by having a fund-raiser event next Friday. Students may come to school in full Sport Uniform with House Shirt. Added to this, special food stalls will be available for students to purchase from during lunchtime. Funds raised during the day will be directed to LifeLink and the College Immersion Program to provide a donation to the local Ngalangangpum school in Warmun. Please note the College canteen will therefore we closed during lunchtime on this day, but will be open before school and at recess.
The Domino Effect, an initiative by our Student Leadership Team, calls for the involvement and generosity of all year levels to bring in items of clothing, blankets and canned food to donate to assist the impoverished. I encourage all families to support this important initiative to warm up someone’s winter with love and generosity and be the Domino Effect!
This week we celebrated both More & Frassati House Feast Days. The days highlighted the virtues of Saint Thomas More and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati and it was wonderful to see students from Years 7 to 12 honour the person who bears their House name. I congratulate both Dr Lynette Field and Mr Jarrod Parry on a wonderful celebration for their respective Houses.
On Wednesday afternoon, our Senior Boys Football team won their semi-final game by 38 points against Comet Bay. Congratulations to Mr Steve Pendleton and the boys for their great game, which I was privileged to see. I wish them all the best in the Grand Final next Wednesday against CBC Fremantle, which will determine who will be the best school football team in the state.
At this time of the year it is important for students to maintain high standards with regards to the wearing of the College uniform. Parents are reminded to ensure students have the appropriate hair style and colour, skirts are of the correct length, and all blazers are clean and tidy within our College guidelines, when students return for Term Three. I thank you all in supporting our students to wear the Emmanuel Catholic College uniform with pride.
God Bless,
Mr Leo Di Gregorio - Principal
I'm sure you will remember our two friends, Elio & Bruno. One day they were walking through a desert. During their journey, they had an argument, and Elio slapped his friend. Bruno was very hurt and wrote in the sand "Today my best friend slapped me". They walked on until they arrived at an oasis where they bathed. Bruno got stuck in the mire and began to drown but Elio rescued him.
Recovering from the near drowning, Bruno carved into a rock "Today my best friend saved my life". Elio exclaimed "When I slapped you, you wrote in sand, and now, you write on a rock!" Bruno said "When someone hurts us, we should write it on sand where winds of forgiveness will erase it away. But when someone does good for us, we should write it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."Learn to write your hurts in the sand, and to carve your blessings in stone.
Fr Bryan Rosling - College Chaplain

SUCCESS FOR EMMANUELS "BOOTS FOR THE BOYS" CAMPAIGN
Emmanuel Catholic College collects nearly 100 pairs of boots for the boys
Close to 100 pairs of football boots were donated to players in Indigenous communities as part of a push by students at Emmanuel Catholic College.
Students were inspired to initiate the “Boots for the Boys” campaign following a tour of Warmun in the Kimberley region last year. Emmanuel student Joe Waters said they watched a football carnival where the talent of the players was undeniable but they were disadvantaged because they did not have the correct footwear.
Students were able to donate 98 pairs of football boots thanks to support from the community, St Jerome’s Catholic Primary School and Mater Christi Catholic Primary School.

FOOTBALL CORNER
Emmanuel win against CBC clears the way to Quarter Finals
It’s been another trailblazing week for our Junior and Senior Boy sides, with both of them progressing in their respective competitions. Our Junior Boys won the South Fremantle District Football title and have earned the right to represent the South Fremantle zone against other WAFL zone winners next term. The Senior Boys won again to move into the grand final and play against CBC Fremantle for the title of the best school in the State.
1st XVIII v Comet Bay
The 1st XVIII squad continue the journey to earn the right to be the best school team in the state after our fantastic win against Comet Bay. We ventured out to McGillivray Oval, in Mount Claremont, to play Comet Bay who were undefeated before our game. This did not daunt any of our players as they were very focused before the game.
Lachie Feeney lost the toss of the coin and Comet Bay chose to kick with a strong four goal breeze. After absorbing 10 minutes of pressure, where Comet Bay kicked a few goals, our midfield trio of Brodie Plunkett, Neil Irani and Kayne Ferraro got plenty of clearances from Jack Lake’s superb rucking. Once the ball entered into the forward line, Lachie Feeney, Liam Porter and Mitch Brown capitalised and by half time we were 10 points up.
In the second half, our side continued to pressure the opposition resulting in multiple turnovers and Emmanuel ended the game up by 38 points. Our defence has been superb throughout our entire campaign and once again stymied many dangerous Comet Bay attacks. There were many standout performances on the day and I would be doing a disservice to many players if anyone was singled out. The coaching staff is very proud of not only the performances of our students but also the respect they show to their opponents.
One game left boys, it’s our chance to create history!
Mr Steve Pendleton - Teacher/Football Academy Coordinator
Junior Boys v CBC Fremantle
It is a fantastic week to be a part of football at Emmanuel. The Junior Boys A-Team played their South Fremantle Division Final against CBC on Monday at home in front of a good crowd. Coming into the game the boys were full of excitement with the opportunity at hand, to win the division final for the first time at Emmanuel.
The players came out firing in the first half, piling on the pressure to the opposition, forcing numerous turnovers. The midfield group, led by Brandon Walker, were tremendous all day with clearances our key to success and something we executed very well. This hard work from the midfield group was capped off by Jacob Plunkett, who cashed in when the ball came inside 50 taking many strong contested marks and kicking truly. The backline also played their role and structured up well, starting many forward attacks from our defensive half and the transition up the ground was very impressive.
I was personally very proud of their efforts and they all deserve a nice break before continuing the final series in Term Three.
Mr Jarrod Parry - Teacher
EMMANUEL STUDENTS FEATURE IN DISNEY ON ICE SHOW

Cora has been selected for a fourth season and Madison selected for a second year to perform in the show. They both worked tirelessly to perform in the heartwarming winter wonderland. Emmanuel is very proud of both the girls.

ANNUAL LIFELINK APPEAL
Food Truck Fundraiser for Archbishop’s LifeLink Appeal
Each year the Archbishop of Perth calls for Catholic schools and parishes to support the Annual LifeLink appeal to support those people in Western Australia who need our support. The LifeLink Day School’s initiative was established in 1999 to:
- To promote understanding of the Church’s response to people in need within the community
- To instill in Catholic students attending Archdiocesan Schools, a sense of responsibility for caring for those less fortunate
- To provide education and information of the work the LifeLink social service agencies, which help many thousands of Western Australians in need each year
- To encourage a “practical demonstration of Faith” by asking students, teachers and schools to organise a special fundraising event for LifeLink Day, with the proceeds aiding people in real need within the community
At Emmanuel Catholic College the Student Leadership team, in consultation with the House Coordinators, is conducting a ‘Food Truck” fundraiser on the last day of Term Two in order to support the Lifelink appeal. On Friday 30 June, students will be permitted to wear their House uniform (PE uniform with House shirt) for the day. At lunch time there will be stalls in a ‘food truck’ style setting on the oval where students can purchase hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, donuts and drinks. The Student Leaders will also be organising other activities for the lunch break so all students are encouraged to bring along a few dollars and support this worthy cause. All funds raised will be donated to the LifeLink appeal. Please note the Canteen will be closed during lunch on this day, but will be open as normal before school and at recess.

THE BISHOPS’ RELIGIOUS LITERACY ASSESSMENT 2017
At the request of the Western Australian Bishops, Years 3, 5 and 9 students in Catholic schools across Western Australia will take part in The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment (BRLA) from the week commencing Monday 31 July in Term Three. The assessment will be accessible to students only online.
Students enrolled in Years 3, 5 and 9 who are following a regular classroom program are expected to participate. Students with disability are also entitled to participate in the assessment. Exemptions may apply.
The Nature and Role of the BRLA
The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment is a large-scale, standardised assessment that consists of a series of Religious Education (RE) tests. The purpose of the BRLA is to measure student learning of the content in the RE curriculum. The test items in the BRLA are developed and marked by the Office of Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA). Formal school and student reports are produced by the Office of CEWA and will become available to schools in Term Four.
The BRLA provides a ‘point in time’ snapshot of student performance in RE. Students’ knowledge and understanding of the content of the RE curriculum is assessed using a combination of multiple choice, short and extended response items. Students’ faith is not assessed. The use of the BRLA complements the school based assessment programs in RE. Please contact your child’s teacher or myself, if you have any inquiries regarding the administration of The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment.

FROM THE FINANCE DESK
EMMANUEL CATHOLIC COLLEGE ON-LINE PAYMENT GATEWAY UP AND RUNNING
REMINDER Term Two school fees are now overdue!! If you have not yet paid please make every effort to pay your account as soon as possible so that future plans and developments at the College are not affected.
Term Three statement will be emailed to families during the term break and are due and payable by 28 July 2017.
If you are on a scheduled payment arrangement with the College, we advise you to monitor your payments to ensure your account will be finalised by the end of October 2017. A large number of families set up their arrangements based on the fees and charges set at the commencement of the year, but fail to include additional charges – VET charges and Instep. It is imperative that all families check their fee statement every term and make the necessary adjustments. It is distressing for families to get to the end of the year and find that the school fee account is in arrears. It is not the responsibility of the College to manage your school fee account.
If at any time you find that you are not able to manage your current repayment schedule, immediate contact must be made so that a meeting can be held to discuss the account. Likewise if you are experiencing any financial hardship please contact the College as we are quite amenable to making realistic payment arrangements for parents who find themselves in such situations, rather than making no payment at all.
Thank you for your continued support and co-operation.
