NISD Gifted Referral Timeline
Middle & High School
INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Thank you for expressing interest in referring your child(ren) for gifted services. Please review this entire document before going to the online referral form.
Please note these pieces of information:
The referral window is now open. It will close on Thursday, March 7.
These assessments are designed to determine if a student has advanced instructional needs that warrant gifted services. Using preparatory materials or resources prior to testing may invalidate the results and the child would not be eligible for services.
Please check back often as we update information as needed.
WHAT IS THE TIMELINE FOR SPRING TESTING AND RESULTS?
The referral window closes at 11:59 PM on Thursday, March 7. The link will not work after that time.
Testing will occur on your child's campus March 20 - 29.
Campus committees will meet upon finishing the testing process to discuss the educational needs of each student tested and notify the parents the week of April 8.
WHEN CAN I APPEAL THE "DOES NOT QUALIFY" PLACEMENT DECISION
Your student was tested for gifted services, but did not qualify. You have questions, like "How can I really understand what this data means?" and "What are the other academic opportunities for my child?" Schedule a conference with the GT Coordinator at your student's campus.
If you feel the need to appeal the campus committee decision, you must do so in writing within 10 days of receiving the test results. Appeals should be directed to the campus committee.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What happens if my child is absent on the day of testing? We will schedule makeup testing as time is available.
Does my child need to be retested if s/he is already receiving services? Your child does not need to be retested once s/he has qualified for services.
My child did not qualify last time s/he was tested. Can s/he be tested again? Yes, students have annual opportunities to be referred for gifted services. In deciding if you should refer your child multiple times, consider the child's instructional needs and his/her response to potentially testing and not qualifying. Sometimes students internalize this as a failure because they do not understand the nature of this kind of assessment and process.
