Principal's Message
February 1, 2019
Dear Willink Families,
Congratulations to Brian Powers who this week was named to be the new principal at Willink Middle School. Mr. Powers is currently an assistant principal at Spry and I am excited about handing over WMS to such a highly regarded school leader. Brian and I have already started meeting to plan the transition and I look forward to doing whatever I can to help him as he takes over the leadership here at Willink. My final day as the interim principal will be March 14.
After months of rehearsals and tons of hard work, The Wizard of OZ premiers tonight at Willink Middle School. The kids (and adults) are very excited and I am too, it's going to be a wonderful show for sure! Congratulations to all involved and it's just great to see a middle school performance that involves 110 kids! Everyone who wanted to participate is involved, that's what middle school drama should be, so as they say in the world of theater........"break a leg!"
Of course, the kids (but none of the adults!?) were thrilled that school was canceled due to the freezing temperatures on Thursday. Today seemed a little better but I can tell you that while I was out front at my usual spot welcoming kids and parents to school this morning, it definitely took me a little longer to thaw out when I came back inside! Back in the olden days when I went to school, there was no such thing as a "cold" day to close school but with the dangers of frostbite better known now, clearly, it's wise to err on the safe side!
So stay warm this weekend, I will see many of you on Saturday night at The Wizard of Oz. I will save my Super Bowl prediction for next year when the Buffalo Bills will be playing!!

News from the Health Office:
Cold & Flu season: As your children wake in the morning complaining of aches, pains,
coughs and runny noses, please listen to them. The symptoms of a cold and the flu are
very similar at the onset, fever, runny nose, sinus congestion, sneezing, sore throat and
cough. Viruses cause both. A cold is caused by a number of viruses, the most common
is rhinovirus (“rhino” is Greek for nose). Influenza viruses cause the flu. Most people
catch a cold by inhaling the virus from someone or having hand-to-hand contact with
someone whom has a cold. If your child has been seen by their physician and
diagnosed with the flu, strep, etc. please indicate reason when calling your child in
absent. If your child is on an antibiotic for strep throat, they must be on medication
for 24 hours after the first dose before returning to school.
Please do not send your child to school with a fever. Your child must be fever free
for 24 hours with out the use of any medication (Tylenol).
Prevention tips:
Avoid contact with someone who has a cold
Wash your hands frequently – yes, you must nag your children
Avoid sharing cups and telephones with someone who has a cold
Treatment tips:
Rest
Fluids – to keep hydrated and loosen mucus in nose and chest
Gargle with warm salt water a few times per day to relieve a sore throat
Use cough lozenges or hard candy to help quiet a cough and soothe your throat
Spring sports – Spring sports will be starting before we know it. If your 7 th or 8 th grader
is interested in participating in a spring sport, you need to establish an account on Family
ID to sign them up. There is a link to this either on THS Athletics web page, or the WMS
Health Office page. If you already have an account, you just need to go on and update
information. To play at a higher level than modified, your child must be asked by the
JV/Varsity coach to participate and they would have to go through the selection process.
Regardless of the level, we must have a current physical on file for your child to
participate. If you have any questions, please contact our office at 670-1035 or 1036.
Scoliosis checks – NYS mandates that schools screen 7 th grade girls for scoliosis
(curvature of the spine). School screenings will be completed this month. If your child
has a current physical on file by their own physician, your child will not need to be
screened. If your child has any significant findings, you will receive a referral in the
mail.
February is also National Children’s Dental Health Month. Below is a link to the
American Dental Association’s website. They have links to some teaching pages for oral
and dental health. http://www.ada.org/5578.aspx
