Welcome to the 2018-19 School Year
A Message from CVUSD Superintendent, Dr. Mark McLaughlin
Dear CVUSD Families:
We are excited to welcome more than 18,500 eager young minds to our school campuses when we open tomorrow for the start of the 2018-2019 academic year!
It’s been a busy summer for Conejo Valley Unified with everyone from our administrators to our maintenance supervisors and custodial teams working tirelessly to ensure our students are greeted with enhanced learning environments, and inviting campuses on the first day of school.
We are proud of the investment in professional learning our teachers, administrators and support staff have participated in over the summer months. Our leaders in the classroom prove that teachers are also students. We enthusiastically support their learning so that they may continue to grow and provide state-of-the-art academic experiences for today’s 21st century students. From California State University Channel Islands to the University of Connecticut our teachers and administrators have been attending conferences, and professional development opportunities across the nation to ensure that we remain prepared to meet the academic and social-emotional needs of every student.
Our staff members have also been going above and beyond to prepare students for back to school with special orientations and school readiness events this August. Some of our youngest students were welcomed to the beginning of their CVUSD careers with unique learning, and friendship building experiences like kindergarten “boot camp,” and playdate events to facilitate an extra boost of readiness before the first day of school. Where Everyone Belongs (W.E.B.) peer mentoring programs took place across our middle school campuses to forge friendships, and a network of support amongst incoming middle school students and their upperclassmen peers. Special orientations for incoming freshmen took place at our high school campuses with the goal of removing some of those first day of school jitters, while inspiring students to follow their academic and extra-curricular passions in the years ahead. These are just some of the targeted actions our schools have in place to support the social, emotional and physical well-being for all the students we serve.
Our students can also expect to experience enhanced environments for learning opportunities with physical upgrades, renovations, and an investment in technology infrastructure having taken place across our school sites. These projects, funded by the District’s school facilities bond, Measure I, support Conejo students in their academic journeys, and prepare them for successful futures beyond graduation day.
Improvements and renovations – big and small – are in motion across all corners of our Conejo campuses as we continue to evolve, and adapt to best serve our community. For a complete list of Measure I projects, and to view each schools’ Final Master Plan, please visit the Measure I webpage on the District’s website.
I am thrilled about the momentum that has been generated over these last several months, the best kind of momentum, the kind taking place across CVUSD, is momentum driven by a unified team with clear and focused goals. I am excited to start this school year, my second, as Superintendent of Conejo Valley Unified Schools. In my tenure I’ve encouraged use of the hashtag #TheConejoWay by the community, parents, students, and faculty to showcase how we are a premier place for learning every day. This school year I encourage the community at large to continue to use this hashtag – especially with those special first day of school photos - so that we may celebrate together all the phenomenal people, activities, and learning experiences that make our schools such exceptional places for learning.
Sincerely,
Mark W. McLaughlin, Ed.D.
Proud Superintendent, Conejo Valley Unified School District
