Why PBIS?


According to the Center on PBIS (pbis.org):


"Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based three-tiered framework to improve and integrate all of the data, systems, and practices affecting student outcomes every day. PBIS creates schools where all students succeed."


According to research, PBIS leads to better student behavior as well as fewer detentions and suspensions. In schools that utilize PBIS students tend to earn better grade and there is also some evidence that PBIS may lead to less bullying.

What is PBIS?

PBIS is a framework, a supporting structure, that enhances academic and social behavior outcomes for all students!


What are the 3 Tiers?

Tier I--Universal Interventions for all students in all settings.

Tier II--Targeted group interventions.

Tier III--Intensive individual interventions


PBIS is for everyone!

Second Semester Reset

Second semester is a great time to revisit expectations in classrooms and in all parts of the building. Schools will do this by re-teaching what positive behavior looks and sounds like in the classroom, lunchroom and all areas of the school. Reteaching of expectations can also be done in after-school activities and at home. This is a great reminder for children and adults how we work together to create a positive environment.

Congratulations Carson Elementary School!


We are honored and proud of our school community for being recognized as a Bronze Receipt by the Ohio PBIS Network. Our PBIS Committee is composed of a diverse cross-section of our staff including teachers, civil service and student services staff in addition to family and community representatives that join us. Monthly we analyze school culture data including LiveSchool behavioral data, student perception surveys, ongoing feedback surveys and results from our evaluation tool. Something innovative this year we implemented was creating a PBIS Tier 1 and Tier 2 Committee to ensure that we create, monitor and evaluate our systems of behavioral supports at both the Tier 1 and Tier 2 level. Also, every single student has a daily CARE Block for explicitly teaching social emotional learning skills using the Thriving Learning Communities Character Strengths Program. Our community knows our motto - At Carson, we CARE.

Mental health care is more important than ever. Treatment and emergency services for children and adolescents are still available in our community. Community Resource- LaRonda Thomas, CPS District Parent Champion and Parent Voice Advocate

There are many amazing ways for you as a CPS Parent/Guardian/Caregiver to activate your voice from our biweekly, Possip surveys which are designed to directly check-in on how things are going at your child's school. Joining your child's school's Parent Group which focuses on the needs within your child’s school from fundraising to volunteering at events and much more. You can also take a seat on the LSDMC or the PBIS committee, which has a strong focus on the decisions which affect elements such as school Core Values, Dress code and School culture. Activating your voice in these various spaces will ensure that it is diverse, equitable and inclusive highlighting the voices of our parents matter within Cincinnati Public Schools.

Our Parent Voice platform is aligned inside of our Community Learning Centers. Which provides and offers health services, counseling, after-school programs, nutrition classes, parent and family engagement programs, career and college access services, youth development activities, mentoring, arts programming and more. This organization provides free resources to educators—teachers, administrators, counselors and other practitioners—who work with children from kindergarten through high school.
