Parents,
Here are some topics you might expect to see in Chapter 1.
Grade K:
Counting & Identifying greater numbers
Grade 1:
Addition & Recognizing definitions of math words
Grade 2:
Pictorial representations of math words & number sentences
Grade 3:
Place Value & Recognizing definitions of math words
Grade 4:
Place Value & Recognizing definitions of math words
Grade 5:
Comparing Place Values & Recognizing definitions of math words
Grade 6:
Decimal Computation & Recognizing definitions of math words
Grade 7:
Proportional Relationships & Recognizing definitions of math words
Grade 8:
Solving with exponents & Recognizing definitions of math words
How can you help as a parent?
Generic Tip: If there is a conversation lull while driving, quiz your child on some basic math facts.
Grade K:
Place 2 small piles of items on the table & have them pick which pile of items is greater.
Grade 1:
Check out www.xtramath.org. You type & have them verbally tell you the answers.
Grade 2:
Have them create a number sentence based on household items. 3 + 2 = 5
Grade 3:
Show them a number and ask them which one is the tens place.
Grade 4:
Show them a number and ask them to identify all the place values.
Grade 5:
Compare the price of homes on www.zillow.com. Ask them which is greater & how do they know.
Grade 6:
What would be the total cost of buying a certain number of grocery products priced with decimals involved?
Grade 7:
If a basketball player makes 15 out of 20 shots, how many would he make if he took 100 shots?
Grade 8:
What is 3 squared minus 2 squared? (9-4 = 5)
Generic Tips
This section will provide some random generic tip or useful piece of information.
New for this issue: PARCC testing will follow the Common Core Standards. Here is a link to a great resource for parents (& teachers) to find out the skills their child should have learned & how they can help at home.
