What's "Special" at Price-Harris?

2nd Quarter Edition

"Special Wednesdays!"

Did you know that every Wednesday students get a bonus time with specials teachers? While classroom teachers are reviewing student data and getting trained in best practices for educating, we get 90 minutes for communications projects, movement activities, team building, and projects. 4th and 5th grades are about to choose clubs they'd like to participate in. Will you choose comic drawing club? Percussion club? Movie making? This is such a unique time to try different things. We love special Wednesdays! Also, it's a good day to wear tennis shoes. We like to do movement and outdoors activities when possible.

Art with Mrs. Fast

Art classes are off to a great start this year. Some of the students’ favorite projects have been the 4th grade cactus, 2nd grade pumpkins, and 1st grade monster trucks. We have been exploring a lot of new art materials and media and the students have particularly enjoyed working with chalk pastels and oil pastels. Several students have asked where they can purchase oil pastels and with the holidays just around the corner I can’t help but think that they would make an excellent gift. In art classes use Crayola brand oil pastels, which can be purchased at a local craft store (such as Hobby Lobby) or online

Library with Mrs. Smith

Students checked out 2,300 books during October! That's exciting! In November, Kindergarteners are busy learning to identify Fiction vs. Non-Fiction books, 1st graders are learning how to use book lookers to be able to choose books on the Easy Fiction shelves. 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders are learning about call numbers and how to put books in order and how to find books independently in Easy Fiction, Fiction and Non-Fiction sections. Fifth graders will start learning a little about coding so we can participate in Hour of Code during the week of December 7.

Our Battle of the Books students have been superstar readers and have read over 160 books as a group. We will have our school competition in January to choose the group who will represent Price-Harris in the district competition. Keep reading!

PE with Mrs. Moore and Mr. Scherer

It is time for Jump Rope for Heart! Last year we raised $5,404.00 as a school. Our Goal this year is $6,000.00. Look for a letter being sent home soon with more information about our schools Jump Rope for Heart. This nine weeks we will be working on long and short jump rope skills, rhythms, as well as catching for our standard one motor skills.

Music with Ms. Hirsh and Mr. Bishop

In music we've practiced skills and concepts from last year and now we're getting on to some brand new learning, plus practicing the pieces to share with families at Watermark Books. In music we learn through moving, seeing, and hearing. That looks like creative movement, playing instruments, playing singing games, hearing music from around the world, reading and writing music notation, and working together as an ensemble. Growing your skills within a group of many other musicians is a unique experience most of us only get in music class at school!

Strings Club with Mr. Bishop

Strings Club is excited to play three songs at Watermark Books this year for the Fall Book Fair: “C’est La Nuit”, “Ode to Joy”, and “Frosty Weather”. Please come see these 4th and 5th grade musicians perform at 2:00 PM on November 21st.
