Wilder Elementary School
Parent Newsletter - September 2019
Greetings Wilder Families!
We are well into the routines of a new school year and it feels great! It feels, even, a bit new! We are implementing a "House System" at Wilder to increase the connectedness among students and staff. We want to ensure that all students have a strong sense of BELONGING. The House System has created much excitement for our school and I expect that will continue! Many thanks to Brittney Tweten, Chelsey Chaput, Katie Bosman, Brandon Boemann, Sara Munson, and Christine (Wysuph) Felix who have put a lot of time and effort into researching and organizing the House System at Wilder. The entire staff has done an excellent job embracing the system and doing what they do so well--connecting with our kids.
The Grand Forks Public School District is hosting a series of Community Meetings during the month of September. The purpose of the meeting is to share information about the budget deficit and facilities study, while also seeking input from our parents and community members. See the listing of all community meetings in this newsletter.
Be sure to put our monthly RED events on your calendar. Our first one is Monday, September 16 at 2:30. Our students so enjoy having a parent or grandparent come join them for about 20 minutes of reading at school!
Looking forward to a wonderful school year with our students... Where they belong!
Sincerely,
Leslie Wiegandt
Principal

Wilder's House System
Each student and staff member at Wilder belongs to a “house”. A house consists of students from grades K-5 and several adult staff members. There are 6 houses at Wilder. Each is represented by a color and a character trait:
Red=Caring Blue=Respect Green=Responsibility
Purple=Fairness Pink=Trustworthiness Yellow=Citizenship
We’ve include Safety as a trait that is embedded in all houses.
Our goal with the house system is to build a greater sense of connectedness and belonging at Wilder. Each house meets once a week to learn about the character traits, plan for how to spread that trait throughout the school, and develop relationships with other students and adults outside their classroom.
Students and staff earn points for their houses when they are noticed showing the house traits.
There is a friendly competition among the houses to be recognized earning points. There is much excitement surrounding the house system. There are house meetings every Thursday morning and each week. one house is celebrated for being the House Leader.
Be sure to ask your child about their house!

Crisis Preparedness and Family Member Roles
In the aftermath of a crisis, it is important to remain calm as children are greatly influenced by their family's sense of well-being, and anything that families can do to reassure students will be helpful. At the same time, families need to be compassionate listeners when their children speak of the crisis.
