Salmon Release
This year we partnered with the DNR to raise and release salmon. The students participated in the Salmon in the Classroom program through the DNR. In the fall, the DNR provided adult salmon for our salmon dissection. The students were able to study the anatomy of the salmon and see the salmon at the end of its life cycle. In November, we received our eggs and took careful care of them. We daily checked the water quality of the tank and the water temperature. We then watched our eggs hatch and develop into healthy fish. We daily fed and cared for our salmon. We even named them! Then in May we released them into Lake Michigan. We used the salmon to learn about life cycles, animal behavior, environmental issues, geography of Michigan and data collection. We already miss our 91 salmon, but hope that they will have a healthy and long life in the Great Lakes.
