Internet Safety Video
The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requires school districts receiving E-rate discounts to educate students about appropriate online behavior. This video was shown to all our students and provides age-appropriate information to students and is intended to seed classroom discussion regarding a variety of topics related to online safety.
Vaping
Ohio Public Health Officials Investigating Reports of Individuals With Severe Pulmonary Illness Following Vaping
State and local public health officials are investigating reports of six Ohioans who experienced severe pulmonary illness following the use of e-cigarettes or vaping. The reports follow a recent national alert to healthcare providers by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about pulmonary illnesses linked to vaping in at least 16 states, primarily among adolescents and young adults.
According to CDC, patient respiratory symptoms have included cough, shortness of breath, and fatigue. In some cases, symptoms worsened over a period of days or weeks and required hospitalization. Other symptoms reported by some patients included fever, chest pain, weight loss, nausea, and diarrhea.
“We are seeing a tremendous increase in vaping among our youth, which is a public health crisis,” said ODH Director Amy Acton, MD, MPH. “There is a perception that vaping is safe, and these reports of serious pulmonary illness linked to e-cigarette or vaping product use show that this is simply not true.”
Besides nicotine, e-cigarette aerosol that users breathe in can contain harmful and potentially harmful substances, including cancer-causing chemicals; heavy metals such as nickel, tin, and lead; volatile organic compounds which can adversely impact health; ultrafine particles that can reach deep into lungs; and flavorings such as diacetyl, a chemical used to give butter-like and other flavors that is linked to serious lung disease.
“Anyone who thinks that they may be experiencing serious breathing problems linked to vaping should seek immediate medical attention,” said Dr. Acton.
Information about vaping and risks associated with e-cigarette use is available on the ODH website and the CDC website. Information about resources to help people quit smoking and vaping are available on the ODH website, including the Ohio Tobacco Quit Line (1-800-QUIT-NOW).

One School, One Book.
Guided by "Akira-sensei," John comes to realize the greatest adversity on his journey will be the challenge of defeating the man in the mirror. This powerful story of one boy's journey to achieve his life long goal of becoming a samurai warrior, brings the Train to be Clutch curriculum to life in a powerful and memorable way.
- Many people love the idea of becoming great, not many fall in love with the process.
- Many people love the idea of the process, not many do the work.
- Chop Wood Carry Water is not a magic potion that you can read once by yourself or with your team and expect transformation overnight.
- You must do the work.
- Greatness takes what it takes.
- Everyone wants to be great until they see what greatness requires.
- There are no shortcuts.
- There is no such thing as microwaveable greatness.
Students will be encouraged to read and focus on one chapter a week, that's right just ONE. Each chapter is only 1-3 pages long. At the beginning of each week, I will email guided notes and, thoughts, challenges, and reflection questions for each chapter. I am looking forward to falling in love with the process of becoming great this year with our students and staff.
Parents and Community Members, there will be extra copies in the High School Office on hand for free if you would like to join us.

Fall visit dates information ($2,000 scholarships for all who attend):
Ohio Northern University will be hosting Polar Preview Day visit programs on September 21, October 19, and November 9. These Saturday visit days are open to all high school students and their families. The program includes campus tours, information on admissions and financial aid, academic sessions with ONU faculty, and a complimentary lunch. Through our partnership with RaiseMe, all students can earn a $2,000 scholarship to attend ONU for coming to one of our visit days (or a personal campus visit). Register at onu.edu/visit.
(Please note, we are also open most Saturdays throughout the school year for individual visits. We hear from students and parents that we are one of the very few colleges/universities that also offer faculty appointments on Saturdays.)
ONU campus updates:
1) For your students interested in Engineering and Computer Science, we have opened our new state-of-the-art Engineering building. This new facility is able to accommodate 600 students and includes 10,000 square feet of large-scale project and design space for capstone projects and competitive design projects and a state-of-the-art cybersecurity laboratory.
2) The average financial aid package for students entering ONU this fall was $23,500. We continue to offer significant academic scholarships, as well as scholarships for students majoring in the visual and performing arts. In addition, students interested in participating in a music ensemble (including the ONU Marching Band) can earn a scholarship.
3) ONU has recently added a new major in Data Analytics. This interdisciplinary program allows students to choose between four focus areas: geography, marketing, social media, and health informatics.
