Wrapping up January!

Hope the weekend was great! We wrap up January this week with some Dodgeball - see K and A's email below. We also have a Wednesday school wide PLC on the EL Roadmap in the library. Let's have a great week!

Wanted to remind you that our annual Dodgeball competition starts on Monday at Lunch. Students DO NOT need to be dismissed early, as games go pretty quickly.

Dodgeball schedule is as follows:

Monday- 9th vs. 11th
Tuesday- 10th vs. 12th
Thursday- Winners from Monday and Tuesday
Friday- Thursday's winners vs. STAFF

Please let me know if you'd like to be on the Staff team for Friday's game. Come on out to the games this week for a fun lunch!

Thank you for your support.

Hello Everyone!

Last week, our ASB students celebrated Kindness Week, an extension of our beginning of the year focus and a reminder that simply being kind can change the world. As you read this update, think about ways today can be one where you lead others with kindness!

Please see below for various articles and updates. A few important reminders:

**Registration for Fall 2019 is now underway. Please see the article below on registration. Remember: you can view the course catalog at this link:

**Wrestling continued its shiny season, still unbeaten as they look toward a huge meet on January 30th at home vs. Casa (Senior Night). Make plans to check out that meet in the PHS Gym.

**Don't forget the Crab Feed coming up on February 2nd. Please see the flyer below.

**Our WASC accreditation visit is coming up in 2019-20. We are beginning the work of looking closely at our teaching and learning practice. We will be reaching out to our parents and students in the coming weeks and months to help us with this work.

Have a terrific week!

HOSA at Mi Futuro Youth Health Symposium

On Friday 1/11/19 HOSA students experienced an excellent professional symposium! Students attended the Mi Futuro Youth Health Symposium which was held at Sonoma State University. Their day began with tabling opportunities to learn about healthcare providers throughout our region and the jobs, volunteer and internship opportunities they offer, as well as a fun photo booth where they could "try on" a health profession. This was followed by inspiring guest speakers and a delicious lunch. After lunch students participated in workshops and met with health professionals from a variety of fields. All in all it was a fabulous day of exploring health careers and opportunities all while experiencing life on a college campus. This is an annual event and HOSA looks forward to attending again next year!

Lady Trojans Marching Through Soccer Season; Huge Game This Wednesday

The Lady Trojans are unbeaten this season, sporting a 11-0-3 record as they head into a pivotal late season match up this Wednesday. Last week, the Trojans took three league matches, defeating Sonoma Valley and Vintage at home and Justin Siena on the road. The team has many strong performers, including Melissa Rocha (9 goals, 9 assists), Frances Goughnour (9 goals, 5 assists) and Lauren Hazel (7 goals, 3 assists). Also starring are Kendra Barry, Alondra Hernandez Ramirez, Hannah Hermann and sophomore Charlotte Crysdale. The defense has been anchored by the strong play of senior Tessa Lambert and junior Zoe Frothinger.

This Wednesday, the Trojans are looking to upend their cross town rival Gauchos who are also having a strong season. Their first meeting ended in a 1-1 draw so this match up will carry bragging rights. The Trojans are looking to solidify their #1 ranking in the North Coast Section Division 3 standings. Head over to Casa to support the team this Wednesday. Go Trojans! Well done, Coach Babala, in leading the squad.

Poetry Out Loud!

This month, students will participate in the Poetry Out Loud competition here at Petaluma High. From their website: "Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has grown to reach more than 3 million students and 50,000 teachers from 10,000 schools in every state, Washington, DC, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico."

Our PHS Honors English 9 students are working with local poet and Poetry Out Loud coach Sandra Anfang and teacher Krista O'Connor to memorize and perform a poem during in-class competitions to prepare for the school-wide competition on January 30. From there, we will advance one winner to the Sonoma County competition on February 11 at the Sonoma County Central Library in Santa Rosa. State competitions follow in March, culminating with a national competition in Washington, DC in April. Good luck to all of our PHS competitors!

"StandOut" Freshmen Honored

Some of our fabulous freshmen class were honored with a pizza party last Friday. Our counseling department asked teachers of freshmen to nominate students who "have made a positive difference in your class - academically, as a leadership role model, or by improved effort and performance."

On Friday, we presented these nominees with a certificate indicating why they were nominated and some pizza to celebrate with! Way to go, freshmen!

MarS Students Accepted to Marine Mammal Center Program

MarS Family, let's celebrate and acknowledge the WONDERFUL NEWS that 8-of-our-14 applicants were accepted into the Marine Mammal Center's "Youth Crew" Intern Program. The highly selective program only accepts 30 out of 200 of the Bay Area's most distinguished high school students per season (after putting the kids through a grueling, nerve-wracking, and highly competitive application & interview process). Those selected get an incredible opportunity to work, first-hand, in the rescue, rehab, and release of endangered, injured, and abandoned marine mammals collected from over 600 miles of California Coast. It is a real-world, bare-bones marine stewardship opportunity, and while other people talk about "saving the oceans," these fortunate and talented young people will ACTUALLY be saving the oceans.

Congratulations to Aylin Ayala, Janice French, Naz Kawasmi, Kayla Pearson, David Aragon, Claire Burrow (go Juniors!),Emma Duiven, and Hannah Morris

Our monthly tradition of recognizing superb Trojans continued with our January celebration. Teachers nominate students for outstanding leadership or for just doing something amazing that might not be noticed. We then gather together in the library and enjoy lunch together, thanks to our fabulous PTSA parents. Below are pictures from this month's celebration and a few of the recognized students and family.
