Mrs. Jenkel's Music Blog Updates
Welcome to Mrs. Jenkel's Music Blog! This blog is used to update you on what's been going on in the music room at Summit. :) To keep you updated, an email will be sent out when specific grade levels are featured!
1st Grade is featured below!
Grade Level Feature- 1st Grade
The first graders have been playing up a storm! Orff arrangements are used to help students learn musical concepts by playing instruments. Three of the first grade classes are doing the activity "Body Director." This is an interesting way of practicing good playing technique on mallet instruments, such as xylophones and glockenspiels. A different technique is employed for each of the student director's movements. The student director directs the class on what to play!
Stepping- Hands alternating
Jumping- Hands together
Waving arms- Glissandos
Wiggling fingers- Rolls or Tremolos

Once the class is well-versed in good technique on the mallet instruments, the students may play accompaniments together. In this video, students are echoing the words of each page of the book In the Tall, Tall, Grass while playing hands together (blocked bordun). During the "page turn song," the students play a downward melody hands alternating while they sing "in the tall, tall, grass." Students also play hand-held instruments, such as guiros, maracas, and rhythm sticks, to the rhythm of the words.
Sorry about the shaky camera. I was turning pages and recording at the same time. :)
