PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Happy Friday Titans,
This is a big issue of "Titan Talk" because next week is an extremely eventful week!
Thanks to Mrs. Ansley's Personalized Learning Committee and our fantastic parent volunteers we are ready to issue laptops on Monday. Also, allow me to give a stellar thank you to Mr. Feilen and our Science Department for preparing our students, teachers, and staff for an extraordinary "real-life experience" in viewing the Solar Eclipse. Please be sure to read Mr. Feilen's article on "Solar Eclipse Safety."
On Wednesday, August 23rd, we will be hosting our Curriculum Night. All parents are invited to join me while I present the State of the School at the Annual Title I Parent Meeting. Prior to my welcome address, Dr. Bearden will hold a TAG meeting in the gym, and Ms. Cote will host a STAR House parent meeting in the cafeteria. After my address, our very engaged PTSA will tell our parents all about the "Beyond the Classroom" fundraising campaign designed to support academic success. PTSA even has big plans to build a ropes course and create student study nooks if they meet their fundraising goals. Starting at 6:30 pm, you will 'walk your child's" schedule and visit with teachers.
We are looking forward to experiencing an "Out of this World" week with you, Titans!
Sincerely,
Kindra L. Smith, Ed.S

"Solar Eclipse Safety" by Mr. Tim Feilen
STEP 1: Learn about "Totality" by viewing the video below
- NOTE: The part of the video when he says that you "can remove the glasses" during the “Totality.” In Roswell, we are NOT in the “path of totality.” Only North Georgia is in the path of "Totality"
- It is IMPORTANT to keep your glasses on until the eclipse is over!
- How to Safely Watch a Solar Eclipse, a five-minute video by American Astronomical Society (AAS) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTCkC5ANlJg
STEP 2: Preventing Sun Damage to your eyes
- “Looking directly at the sun without the correct eye protection, even for a short time, can cause permanent damage to your retinas, a light-sensitive part of the eye that transmits what you see to your brain.
- Sun damage to your eyes can occur without pain, and it can take a few hours or even a few days after viewing the eclipse to have symptoms of damage.
- These symptoms may include not being able to see colors as well and loss of central vision, with only side vision remaining. If you notice any symptoms after viewing the solar eclipse, seek immediate help from your eye care professional.”
STEP 3: It is important to model how to properly view the eclipse, using your pair of glasses.
- Look at the ground and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer.
- NEXT, turn towards the sun and observe the eclipse keeping your glasses on the entire time.
- After glancing at the Sun, turn away and remove your filter — do not remove it while looking at the Sun.
STEP 4: Tips to Keep Your Eyes from Being Damaged during the Eclipse.
- Stand still, and put on your eclipse glasses before looking up at the eclipse. Turn away to remove your eclipse glasses. Do not remove them while looking at the sun.
- Do not look at the eclipse through a camera, a telescope or binoculars while using your eclipse glasses — the concentrated solar rays will damage the filter and enter your eye(s), causing serious injury.
- Always inspect your solar filter/glasses before use. If scratched or damaged, discard them and ASK YOUR TEACHER FOR ANOTHER PAIR.
- Do NOT remove your glasses at all during any part of the eclipse.
- If you normally wear eyeglasses, KEEP THEM ON. Put your eclipse glasses on over them.
- Supervise children viewing the eclipse.
STEP 5: Other DO NOTs!!!
- Do not look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed Sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars, or another optical device.
- Similarly, do not look at the Sun through a camera, a telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while using your eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewer. The concentrated solar rays will damage the filter and enter your eye(s), causing serious injury.

Robotics Club Orientation - Aug. 29th @ 6 pm in the Café
The Elkins Pointe Robotics Club is back and opens for enrollment for the 2017-2018 season. We had an amazing run last school year with the team showing a very strong performance. Our robots rocked! Check out our website at http://epmsrobotics.org.
Now we are gearing up for yet another great year. We are hoping to see our old club members and looking for new faces to join us. Robotics is about many things: great ideas, teamwork, creativity, and fun. What matters is to turn a great idea, a fruit of
imagination, into something that actually works, a robot, for example, that can score points and withstand impacts of a rough game.On August 29th, we will be holding a robotics orientation for all interested students and parents in the cafeteria at 6 pm. You will learn about the program, the curriculum, and the competitions. We will also show our robots that we made during the last robotics season.
Parents, to make the program successful to the full benefit of the students, your participation and support are essential. If you can help with the program, fund-raising activities, etc, we would love to talk to you at the orientation or hear from you sooner.
Feel free to reach out with questions, ideas, comments to Stephanie Castleberry at castleberrys@fultonschools.org or Sasha Jeltuhin at sjeltuhin@gmail.com.
