STEM- Be A Part of the Equation

Blackman is opening a new elective focus area – STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). These courses do not satisfy science or math graduation requirements, but they will explore careers in STEM. Also, the courses will better prepare the student to pursue advanced study in the STEM field of their choice at a variety of postsecondary institutions.

This preparation will include research on current STEM topics, career requirements and some foundational history. Students will also learn career skills in laboratory experiments, design processes and project management. We are making plans for our 3D printer, microscopes, robots, electronic kits, and more. These tools will let our students explore, learn, build, program, invent and even make mistakes.

What kind of student are we looking for? There are no prerequisites, but we do expect the students to have shown proficiency and high aptitude in previous science and math coursework. Other attributes include:

* They took things apart as a child. Maybe even put them back together!

* They smile when they touch a new roll of duct tape.

* Some of their favorite TV shows include Mythbusters, NOVA, the DIY channel, Discovery channel and Bill Nye the Science Guy.

Future courses will build on their skills in problem solving, collaboration and communication.

STEM 1: Foundations is being taught by Ken Hardison. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering, a MS in Industrial Engineering and additional training in environmental regulations, safety standards, ISO quality standards and Lean Manufacturing. He has over 20 years work experience in manufacturing, healthcare and as a consultant to Tennessee businesses and industries. For the last eight years he has taught Algebra here at Blackman.

See your counselor to sign up! If you have already registered and did not include STEM 1: Foundations – Contact your counselor!

Be part of the equation. Be part of the solution.
