Literacy Night! March 7 6:15-7:30 pm
Literacy Night is coming! Mark your calendars for a night of fun reading based activities, snacks, and prizes! Hope to see all of you there!
Class Spelling Bee
Our class spelling bee will be Tuesday, March 12. During that time the top 5 spellers will be determined. Those 5 will move on to the 2nd grade spelling bee on March 23rd. There will also be 2 alternates identified in case someone is absent on March 22nd. Both spelling bees are for students and teachers only. This is for fun and to introduce them to the spelling bee format for future years when they can move on to the Grant County bee.
Wax Museum Is Coming Up Soon!
April 12th is the date of the wax museum. Please start working on your child’s costume. I need the costumes at school no later than Friday, April 5th. Please don’t spend lots of money on the costume. It is nice to shop at Goodwill and other thrift shops to find pieces that will make the costume special. Just get as close as you can to the look and time period of the character and be creative!
Swimming is Coming- March 18th- April 3rd
Each child will need a swimsuit and towel daily. One piece suits for girls please! More info to come as the date nears. I am sending home a calendar to sign up for swim snacks. Please return that to me no later than Friday, March 8 if you'd like to help with snacks so that I can confirm the date with you. I only need 8 days worth of snacks this year.
Winter Coats Needed
Please continue to send a winter coat with your child. Morning recess is still quite chilly and we want everyone to be dressed safely for the temperature.
If you’d like to sit with your child at lunch we’d love to have you. Lunch begins at 11:47 a.m. If you wish to eat the school lunch, please call the office to order a tray.
Reading
We continued our unit on comparing and contrasting within and among texts. We are looking for deeper answers - things like “ the text says that tornadoes can last a few minutes, but hurricanes can last for days but both can cause a lot of damage.” We are certainly moving away from basic answers like , “ both characters are boys” or “ that dog is nice but the cat is bad.”
Math
We finished up our measurement unit- telling time to the 5 minutes is how we ended our week!
hour hand, minute hand
quarter past, quarter to, half past, o'clock
time to 5 minutes on an analog clock
Goals for Subtraction Facts
Level M by March 8
Level Z by May 22
Once a student reaches Level Z and can do at least 95 out of 100 subtraction problems in 5 minutes they move to multiplication facts.
English and Writing
Nearly done with our research for the wax museum. Speech writing comes next. This will be a very structured speech- it is their first time to write something formal for a presentation. Just letting you know that when they come home, it will be their words and it will sound like an 8 year old wrote it- because they did! It will be their work and they are so proud of the information they've found in our research time.A copy will be sent home before spring break so everyone can start practicing!

A fun website: www.learninggamesforkids.com
This site is loaded with appropriate and fun games, videos, and even printable worksheets that help kids practice skills in many subject areas. You can set the grade level for each game or activity you would like your child to do. We have used this at school for dental health and it was a big hit. Try out a few at your house!
