Parents: How to Help Your Teen Develop Strong Roots While Learning to Fly
As kids get older and advance to high school, talking to them about their school life can become more challenging for parents. With younger children, parents stay connected to school because they are often required to sign off on weekly progress reports, attend parent-teacher conferences, or simply drive their kids to school. But when students reach high school connecting with children over school can become difficult. Even if parent involvement in academics is hard, it’s incredibly important. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) surveyed 25,000 students in 8th grade, 10th grade, and 12th grade. The students’ responses along with surveys of their parents and educators, along with academic data indicated that parental involvement in school correlates with higher achievement in school.
The most important way for parents or guardians to get involved is to show interest in the student’s academics at home. Staying informed of important dates by checking the school website here can help parents participate in activities such as Meet the Teacher, College Information meetings, student performances such as concerts and athletic competitions, Parent Booster Club meetings, and Parent Education opportunities. Keeping records updated with change of phone numbers can help keep the lines of communication open between school and home. Another valuable tool that can help keep parents informed is the Parent Portal which provides parents/guardians immediate access to grades, assignments and attendance records in an effort to facilitate and improve communication between home and school. According to one of our teachers who also has a son at LEHS, “This is a great way to check on your son or daughter's progress in their classes each day. You can set up alerts and check grades daily.” Directions for setting up a parent portal account can be found here. I would like to invite all parents to set up an account and begin communicating with your child’s teachers.
We want to invite you to join us for Meet the Teacher this Tuesday evening 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. This will be a opportunity for parents to follow their students schedule and walk in their shoes. Teachers will be in their classrooms to greet parents and provide some basic information about their course. Clubs and organizations will have booths set up along the main corridor for parents and students to explore all that LEHS has to offer. We are excited to meet and greet you on Tuesday to begin our 19-20 partnership making this the best year yet. This evening will be come and go so don't worry if you can't be there when the doors open. There will be no formal program, just time to make connections and share information.
One of our core values states, “As Lobos we value open, transparent, and timely communication.” A strong home-to-school partnership requires two way communications that support parents as they navigate the new roles that they are forging with their teens. Little Elm High School is committed to working with parents to support every student in reaching their highest potential. Together we can give our students the roots to grow and the wings to fly.

Let's Talk 18-19: Celebrating a Banner Year
Meeting on State Rating: Tuesday, September 3 6-6:30 PM in LEHS Lecture Hall
Ms. Pentecost and Mrs. Chesnut will go over our school report card in a brief meeting before Meet the Teacher begins at 6:00 PM in the LEHS Lecture Hall. We welcome you to come out and hear about the work we have been doing and the plans we have to keep moving on up the scale. This exciting progress is due to the hard work of all of our students and teachers and we want to share the good news with you!
Students may pick up their laptop the day after their Device Protection Fee has been paid in the library before school, after school, or during lunch.
- Reduced device protection fee to use a district issued laptop.
- Fee waiver to take the SAT and/or ACT for free
- Dual Credit tuition for free at NCTC
- AP Exam Test fee reduction
High school students often do not want to participate in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. The Federal Free/Reduced Lunch Program is the standard used by many programs to qualify students for financial assistance. Even if a student never uses their eligibility in the lunchroom, they can benefit greatly in other areas if they qualify for the Lunch Program. Eligibility has to be reestablished each year. You can fill out the application here. We highly suggest that all families fill out an application to see if you qualify.
ASVAB - Wednesday, September 18th
We will be offering the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) to all interested 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students on September 18, 2018. The ASVAB is a multi-aptitude test used by the military to determine if you are qualified to join one of the services and what areas you would excel in. The test will be given during the school day at LEHS and results will be released to recruiters about a week after the test. This is a great opportunity for students who have thought about a career in the military.
The deadline to register is Monday, September 9th – please use this link: ASVAB Registration

Report Harmful, Harassing, and Bullying Behavior
LEISD has an on-line tool called "Anonymous Alerts" that students, parents, and teachers can use to report harmful, harassing, and bullying type behaviors. Anonymous Alerts bullying reporting mobile app helps combat bullying and other negative activity in schools by empowering students to speak up. Social and peer pressures are some of the hardest obstacles for students to overcome. Anonymous Alerts encourages students, parents and staff to quickly, easily, and anonymously report bullying, cyber-bullying, gang-related issues, and other sensitive topics through private messages to school officials by building. All reports remain completely anonymous even during a two-way email conversation, although submitters have the option to reveal their identity if they prefer to have a person-to-person discussion.
