Whitford Catholic Primary School
Newsletter 29 - 18 September 2019
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
CECWA Policy Development - An Invitation to Have Your Say
The Catholic Education Commission of Western Australia (CECWA) is reviewing their system policies which support 75,000 students and 12,000 staff in 162 schools.
CECWA invite all students, parents, CEWA staff and members of our community to help by letting them know our views on “What makes a good Catholic school?”
Facilitated sessions will take place at the CEWA Leederville Office. You can book your preferred session time online and choose from:
* Early Years LOFT Sessions (for Pre K - Year 4 Students and their Family)
* Open LOFT Sessions (Years 4 - 12 Students, Families, Staff and Community)
During the school holiday sessions, participants will also help to create a mural alongside local artist Linzi Carter. This is an evolving creation, whose form will develop with each session.
We have been welcomed to participate in this unique opportunity to have our say on the future of our schools.
For more information and to register for a session, see: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/o/loft-catholic-education-western-australia-20262532767
I believe that the voice of all members of our CEWA community is vital to ensure that system policies are developed to meet the contemporary and future needs of schools. I encourage families, including children to participate. Please register directly online.
Tournament of the Minds State Finals
Congratulations to the following ARTS team members who participated in the TOM State Finals at ECU last Sunday: Abby Hermann, Anna Wintle, Annabelle Plichta, Eliza Boylen, Hayley Cavanagh, Ella Forsyth and Ella Kane. They did an amazing job, and although they have missed out on moving to the next level, we are very proud of all they have achieved to date. What an experience!
It was also a proud moment to see the following ex-students participating in the secondary TOM challenges: Kayah Mirski-Smith, Hannah Mohr, Evie McAlpine, Grace Kane, Erin Kretschmer, Cara Di Girolami and Claudia Dineen.
Chess Competition:
The following Year 6 students, Chris and Grace Jo and Evan Daniels participated in a Chess competition last Friday, and I hear they had a fabulous day, finishing overall in 6th place. Congratulations to Grace Jo who was awarded the top female player in a non-winning team. Thank you for representing our school so well.
Athletics Carnival (Years 3 – 6):
Our students again demonstrated positive sportsmanship and teamwork as well as trying their very best in individual events. We were certainly blessed with amazing weather for the two carnival days last week and I take this opportunity of thanking Adriano D’Adamo and the many helpers throughout the day. A terrific demonstration of community spirit – thankyou! We now look forward to the upcoming interschool competition.
Staffing:
One of our Year 6 teachers, Mrs Sam Hales, who has been unwell this term, has extended her leave for the remainder to the school year. We wish Mrs Hales well as she continues to focus on her recovery and we look forward to seeing her back with us in 2020. In the meantime, Mrs Jen O’Halloran and Mrs Narelle Sumner, will continue teaching in Year 6.
On a finishing note, congratulations to all our families for preparing your children so well for their school photos and to Mrs Cath Hughes for coordinating the whole process. A great team effort – thank you.
Kindest regards with many blessings

Social Worker News
On Thursday evening of last week, we had Justine O'Malley - Child Safe Consultant from CEWA present the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Workshop at WCPS.
The Workshop was engaging and informative and provided parents and caregivers with an overview of the Keeping Safe Child Protection Curriculum that is implemented at WCPS as well as information on how to reinforce these personal safety messages at home.
Some of the take home messages form the Workshop include:
- Themes in KS:CPC
- We All Have the Right to Be Safe
- We Can Help Ourselves to Be Safe by Talking to People We Trust
- Children learn what are safe and unsafe situations, and how to recognise and know what to do in an emergency
- Children learn what trust is, how to develop a trusted network and ways to get help
- Children learn the concept of personal space, correct anatomical names of body parts, and appropriate and inappropriate types of touching
- Children learn how to recognise a safe and unsafe secret, and what to do with about unsafe secrets
- Children learn problem solving strategies for keeping safe and how to use assertive communication
- Children learn what persistence is and why it is important, and how to be assertive
Thank you to those that attended the Workshop. We understand that family life is busy but we strongly encourage all WCPS families to take advantage of these workshops and sessions in future as they provide a valuable opportunity to build our capacity and confidence in supporting our children as they grow and develop.

Cool Kids Child Anxiety Program – For eligible Year 4 students
Anxiety is also known as worry, fear, nervousness, shyness………. it can have lots of names!
Anxious and fearful behaviour is common in children. Most children learn how to manage a range of fears and worries.
Everyone gets anxiety, but some people become anxious more easily, more often and more intensely.
Mrs Elaine Mahon - Social Worker, will be running a School Based Cool Kids Anxiety Program small group for eligible Year 4 students commencing this term.
The Cool Kids Child Anxiety Program is a structured, skills-based program that teaches children and their parent(s) how to better manage a child’s anxiety. It is designed for children aged 6 –12 years of age. The aim of the program is for children and parents to gain knowledge, confidence and skills in understanding and managing anxiety.
If you believe:
* Your child feels more anxious than other children their age and ability
* Anxiety stops your child from participating in activities at school or socially
* Anxiety interferes with your child’s ability to do things other children of similar age do easily
* Your child’s anxiety and fears seem out of proportion to what is happening in their life
And would like more information on the Cool Kids Program, please CLICK HERE to view the Cool Kids brochure.
If you would like to discuss the Program and the referral process involved, please contact Mrs Elaine Mahon via email to arrange an appointment.
