Newsletter Week 1, Term 1
Huirangi Primary School, Tuesday 31st January 2023
Kia Ora Koutou, Hello Everyone!
Welcome back to a new school year! I hope you all had a break over the summer and got to spend some quality time with your family. We are really excited to have all our tamariki back, fresh and ready to learn!
It was awesome to have so many of our community utilising the pool over the summer holidays. A huge thank you to our caretaker, Wayne Havard for taking care of the pool this summer. Wayne has put hours of time and energy into keeping our pool as clean as possible. Without his time, we would not be able to open the pool to our whānau. Thanks again, Wayne.
Please ensure your children come to school every day with their togs, caps and a towel (named!). We have employed a qualified swim coach, Sue Cox to take each class three times a week for specialised lessons. A huge thank you to Todd Energy who funds this swimming programme for us!
Hats can be purchased from the office for $12. As far as we know, all students have a school hat, but if these get lost new ones can be purchased.
You may have noticed that we still have a hole in the ceiling in the office area. We have had funding approved from the MoE, and hopefully works will begin soon to have it repaired.
This term we are focussing heavily on the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum in the lead up to our 150th Jubilee. It would be great to have conversations with your children about what school was like when you attended, as we will be doing some comparing and contrasting to school life now, to school in the past.
Over the holidays the staff were involved in a new maths initiative called Numicon, which will be rolled out in every class this week. Numicon aims to facilitate children's understanding and enjoyment of maths by using structured imagery that plays to their strong sense of pattern. This is done through research-based, multi-sensory teaching activities. It also fulfils the requirements of the New Zealand Curriculum as well. We hope to hold a parent evening modeling this soon!
It is Waitangi Day on Monday. School is closed.
It's great to be back!

Healthy, Active Learning-Whānau Survey
Our school is involved in a government wellbeing initiative called Healthy Active Learning.
Part of the Child Youth and Wellbeing Strategy, it is now in its third year and in over 900 schools across the motu.
To help understand its impact, the Massey University evaluation team is keen to hear about
how your tamariki participate in physical activity and healthy eating and drinking at our
school and community.
They have put together a survey which takes 5-10 minutes and, on completion, puts
you in the draw to win a $100 supermarket voucher.
Complete the survey at: https://massey.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_e5SnfFUZmmyyFJb

We are always on the lookout for new members. It isn't a huge commitment, but it is definitely worthwhile being involved in fundraising events for our kura and tamariki.
The next meeting is on Wednesday 8th February at 2pm in the staffroom, which will be our AGM. We are currently looking for someone to fulfil the Treasurer role. If this sounds like you, then please come along!
