When it rains ... and other COVID mitigation ideas
At Back to School Nights, the blacktop, and board meetings, parents and guardians have asked what they can do to help with COVID mitigation measures. Here are a couple quick steps you can take to help:
- Children and adults should stay home when ill.
- Before arriving at school, please complete the daily WCHD COVID Symptom Screening Tool.
- To help ameliorate the strain on emergency health care resources, we encourage families to follow up with a primary physician/urgent care first when possible for routine testing and evaluation. If the situation is an emergency, please call 911 or visit the nearest emergency room.
- With staffing shortages, encourage people you know to apply for vacancies in preschool, before and after school childcare, as paraprofessionals, in buildings and grounds, and for lunch and recess supervision.
- On rainy days, could you pick your student up for a lunch date? Follow your school's call-in procedure to check them in and out. The daily schedules are posted below to check if your schedule matches their lunch time. (Please check with your elementary school to verify lunch schedule - some have adjusted times to allow for distancing at lunch). Rain is expected the next three days. When we can't eat outside in inclement weather, every spot inside helps with distancing. This isn't possible for all families, but it's an idea.
- What are your ideas? Email info@gpschools.org with creative solutions.

USDA waiver continues for free school lunches
There is another USDA waiver in place for this school year that allows all students to eat for free. However, we are still accepting and processing free and reduced lunch applications through K12 as these numbers impact the amounts the district receives in federal grants. Last year there were also pandemic EBT benefits that families were eligible for if they qualified for free and reduced lunch through either direct certification or an approved application. Unfortunately, some families missed out on these benefits because they didn’t apply. If you think you might be eligible, please submit a free and reduced meal application so if other Federal or State benefits become available throughout the year, you will be set to receive those.
School lunch menus
Families can view the daily menu items for school lunches by visiting our website and clicking on the Meals & Nutrition button and choosing “menus”. Menus are also available on our app under “Resources for Parents & Staff.”

Uploading student COVID vaccine card
All eligible students can upload their COVID vaccine card using the MiStar Parent Portal by following the directions linked here. According to quarantine guidelines from the Wayne County Health Department, any student who is fully vaccinated will not be required to quarantine if they are identified as a close contact to a COVID positive individual. Uploading your student’s vaccine card will help the district quickly identify those students who will not be required to quarantine. Thank you!
