Post-Secondary Planning for Seniors
Fall Newsletter
Greetings and Welcome Back
We hope this newsletter finds you well and that your senior year is off to a great start. Please read this newsletter, as it contains helpful and important information regarding the college application process, as well as information on mandatory tasks that all seniors must complete.
COMPLETE THESE 6 STEPS IN ORDER BY NO LATER THAN OCTOBER 1:
1. Watch the Senior College Presentation
Students may access the slides ahead of time via the link below:
2. Take A Naviance Refresher Course
Your username is your myLCUSD email address. Password was set by each student. If you have forgotten your password, please reset it on Naviance. If that does not work, email your counselor for assistance.
Watch the tutorial below for answers to ALL of your Naviance questions, including how to add colleges to your "colleges I'm thinking about list," requesting teacher recommenders, how to do a Supermatch and other important features.
3. Match Your Common App and Naviance Accounts
To match your accounts, you'll need to do the following on Common App first:
- Create a Common App account
- Find and add LCHS as your current high school
- Add at least one college to your Common App list
- Sign the FERPA Release Authorization. LCHS requires that students waive their rights to view letters of recommendation in order for us to write your letter.
Next, go back to Naviance and match accounts by doing the following:
- Go to the "Colleges I'm applying to" section
- Click on "Match Accounts"
- A new tab will open and you can click "I agree" to continue matching, then click "connect."
And boom! You're done. Any college you have listed in your Common Application should now appear in your Naviance list of colleges. If you need to see this in action, you can watch the video below:
4. Move Final College List to "Colleges I'm applying to" in Naviance
Students will have until FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1 to add/edit their final list of colleges to Naviance. Here is how to add your colleges:
- Log-in to Naviance
- Go to "Colleges I'm Thinking About"
- Review your list and if you need to add colleges, click the "Add colleges to list" link and add each new college to your list by checking the box and clicking on "favorites" up top
- Move each of your final colleges from your "colleges I'm thinking about" list to your "colleges I'm applying to" list by checking the boxes next to each college, clicking "move to application list," select the deadline (early action, early decision, regular, etc), select how you will apply, then click "add applications."
- Any changes made after Oct. 1 must be made directly with your counselor.
Watch these if you need more help:
5. Request Teacher Letters in Naviance and Complete Brag Sheets
Request teachers in the "colleges I'm applying to" section. Be sure to accurately assign them to the correct colleges to which you would like their letter sent.
Brag sheets are mandatory if you require a letter of recommendation for college.
If the school requires a counselor letter (also known as the "Secondary School Report/Counselor Report" in Common App), you will be REQUIRED to fill out the counselor brag sheet and a parent/guardian must complete the parent bragsheet.
The counselors suggest filling out a teacher brag sheet for each teacher writing your letters.
You can find the brag sheets in the "surveys" section of Naviance (under "About Me"). The questions for 2022 have been revised, therefore you may need to add additional data if you completed the brag sheet over the summer. For the parent brag sheet, log in to your account, open the parent brag sheet, and have a parent complete it there.
6. College Appointments
Each counselor will provide instructions for scheduling the college counseling appointment when we present to classes on Sept. 7. At that time, you'll be able to set up your appointment using the following guidelines:
- For students applying under any sort of EARLY admission plan (i.e. ED or EA), meetings must take place by October 8.
- For students applying under REGULAR and ALL OTHER decision plans, meetings must take place by November 5.
COLLEGE REP VISITS
Please visit your Naviance Student or the LCHS website to view a listing of the scheduled visits, or see the chart below. Check the list often. It changes frequently as new colleges are added to the list. Here is how to register for a college visit.
- Login to your Naviance account
- See "What's New" on your homepage
- Click "More Info"
- Register
Note the time, date, name of the college representative in your calendar, and whether the visit is in person or virtual. If you need to cancel your registration for any reason, please do so prior to the event by clicking "Cancel" in your Naviance Student account. This is especially important so we do not have representatives waiting for you.
Off Campus College Visits
It is best to plan college visits on non-school days - during summer, holidays or pupil-free days. La Cañada High School, however, allows as a courtesy to students and their families, up to six days per school year to be excused for college visits when going during non-school days is not practicable. In order to excuse an absence of this kind, the parent must verify the visit.
Requirements:
- college/University Visit Verification Form must be completed and signed by a parent guardian attached below)
- Written documentation from the college or university such as a tour schedule, hotel/airline receipt, brochure, agenda or other prospective student material must be attached.
UPCOMING COLLEGE/CAREER EVENTS
TRANSCRIPTS
- Must order and pay before your application deadlines
- Common App schools typically require both the secondary school report (initial transcripts) and a midyear report (includes first-semester senior year grades). That means for some schools you will be required to purchase 2 transcripts per application.
- Students will request transcripts on Naviance and pay for transcripts in the online student store.
- Transcripts are $5 each.
- If you took courses anywhere outside of LCHS, it is the student’s responsibility to send that transcript to your colleges separately.
- It is the student’s responsibility to know the transcript requirements at the schools to which they are applying.
- Cal States and UCs do NOT require transcripts as part of the application process. Do not order one until they specifically request it from you.
