Iowa State Vs. Iowa

Fall is in the air, and we all "survived" the legendary ISU vs. Iowa rivalry football game. In my opinion, it was a pretty ugly game. Some of us were disappointed and some of us were happy. But in the end, we can all be proud to be represented by two great football teams from the state of Iowa. And of course, we can't forget the UNI Panthers and their loyal fans as well! Make that 3 great regent football teams!

The picture above is an old one of my daughter, Raina, and my son, Tommy. I share it every year because it brings back such great memories. We've been split on ISU and Iowa for years in my family. It makes for an interesting afternoon of football...

Remember...let's all be friends on Monday. Ha ha!

*** MARCHING BAND, COLORGUARD, & CHEER ***

Big picture
When I think of football, it also makes me think of marching band. Mr. Piper started off his teaching career this fall with two back-to-back home game performances. One awesome addition this year is having our pep band in the stands of our student section to play throughout the first half of the game. Mr. Piper also added "the tunnel" as our football players take the field. I LOVE IT when we take chances and try new ideas! Great things are in store for our GHV High School Band!

Also, a big shout out to Mrs. Osterkamp and our Colorguard team as well as Coach Skjeie and our cheerleaders!

Fall is in the air at GHV!

*** MRS. VANSICKEL'S FOODS CLASS ***

I was fortunate enough to sample some of the gourmet salsas made by the students in Mrs. Vansickel's Foods class. The students worked in groups and created salsa with a variety of different textures and flavors, from a hint of lime to a tangy tomato to green and spicy. They were all delicious! Well done, kids! *** Mr. Baumgard's Agriculture Classes ***

Farm Progress Show - The Nation’s Largest Outdoor Farm Event

Mr. Baumgard and many of our GHV agriculture students were able to attend the Farm Progress Show that was hosted in Boone. Below is a description of what the Farm Progress Show is all about....

"For over 50 years, the Farm Progress Show has connected farmers from across the globe with agriculture’s leading companies. With hundreds of exhibitors, there’s no better place to engage with the latest farm products and the specialists who developed, tested and designed them. Whether you are looking to innovate with the latest ag-technology, learn from industry experts, or share your farming legacy with your family, the Farm Progress Show has it all."

We are so fortunate so many of our kids were able to participate in this amazing event! Thank you, Mr. Baugmgard, for giving our kids this opportunity!

Ag Days 2022

"The Iowa River FFA Chapter traveled to the Hancock County Fair Grounds on September 7th to help host the 3rd grade Ag Days! The chapter worked alongside West Hancock FFA and our local Farm Bureau to make the day run smoothly."

When our students returned to school that day, three boys came to my office to talk about what a great experience this was for them. They talked about how the kids were really engaged and focused at first, and then all they wanted to do was climb into the combine and honk the horn. I asked if they had a better understanding of what is what like to be a teacher, and they smiled. LOL!

I love it when our high school students help educate our younger population. It is a win-win for all!
