Dear Sister Alphonse Academy Families!
Dear Parents/Guardians:
We have enjoyed a great week of exciting learning and community building at SAA. A kind reminder that there is no school tomorrow, April 23rd, as this is a staff meeting day.
Picture day for Grade nine farewell and other students who are new to SAA, or did not have a picture taken in the fall will be held on Wednesday, April 28th by Icon so that they are included in the yearbook for this year. Retakes were previously held before Christmas.
As Knights we live our commitment to SERVE, ACHIEVE AND ASPIRE, as we Arise up to help those in need.
God bless and take care.

Alberta Education Assurance Framework
As part of the Assurance Framework, Alberta Education surveys teachers, students and their parents/guardians to gather information on the quality of education provided by school authorities and their schools. Results are provided to SAA and GSACRD to evaluate school and school authority performance on AEA survey measures, report in our annual education results reports and help us develop our education plan.
Please watch your mailboxes for your own personal survey information package. You will be receiving a random access code in the mail to complete the survey found at https://public.education.alberta.ca/APOS/. We have much to celebrate at SAA and we thank you in advance for your feedback!
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DEADLINE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS SURVEY IS WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28, 2021. Students in Grades 4 - 9 participated in taking the Assurance survey on this past Tuesday and Wednesday.

Walk a mile in my shoes - CSS for vulnerable youth
We are excited to be using our United Way grant of $1000 and some of our Break a Rule Day proceeds to purchase new sneakers for vulnerable youth! We are also holding a New/gently used Sneakers drive for youth that is being led by Mrs. Trenchard's Grade three class!
If you have new/gently used runners to contribute, please send them to school over the next two weeks. This sneaker drive will run from April 26 - May 7, 2021. All safety protocols will take place as the shoes are gathered for donation. Gerald from CSS will be picking up the items shortly after our collection date, at which time we will be able to connect with him virtually once again!
Our students are excited about being able to create hope filled messages which will be included with the sneakers. As Knights, we are Arising Up! to make a difference and live like Jesus!

GSACRD - Draft Curriculum Update
As our Superintendent Dr. Clint Moroziuk and GSACRD School Board Chair, Noreen Radford recently stated:
"Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools (GSACRD) is sincerely appreciative of the feedback that we have received from our staff, parents, and community partners about the recently released draft Kindergarten-Grade 6 curriculum. We are committed to continuing to work with stakeholders to provide the Ministry of Education with suggested revisions as we collaboratively review this draft curriculum. However, at this time, the Division will not be piloting the draft K-6 curriculum in the 2021-2022 school year. The key priority for the Division is student learning, which includes working to address any achievement gaps that may have come about as a result of the pandemic and ensuring that students and staff can have a school year that is as close to normal as possible, particularly in light of the many challenges faced over the course of the past year due to COVID-19."
Cst. Tran - Grade 5/6 RCMP - Lifeskills Training Program
Staff from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), with the support of Sister Alphonse Academy, will be delivering this program to provide young people with an opportunity to develop essential life skills and build positive relationships with adults in their communities.
We are grateful for this opportunity to work with the RCMP.
Much to Celebrate!
According to our recent District Assurance Survey, 90.4% of Grades 7 - 9 students acknowledge and report that they learn about and practice faith in school (prayers, liturgies, celebrations, masses). 92.5% of Junior High respondents agree with the statement that: Overall, I am confident that this is a good school. There is much to celebrate!
Student Health & Safety
With students away from school during spring break, we are reminding students of the Covid-19 safety related protocols that are in place. Please help your child remember all of the expectations as this keeps all of us safe in school.
On August 4, grades 4-12 students and all staff have been asked to wear masks and mask use will be mandatory in common areas and when physical distancing of 2m is not possible. K-3 students are not required to wear masks, but mask use is encouraged as much as possible. Masks are to be worn while riding the bus as well.
Additional hand sanitizer dispensers have been installed in every school and division office and additional hand sanitizer has been provided to schools to enable individuals to practice good hand hygiene.
It is recommended that individual-sized hand sanitizer bottles be purchased for your children so that they have this with them throughout the day. If you need to purchase another one for Monday please do so. Thank you.
Students please bring your own water bottle to school and do not share them. Water fountains will remain open and be cleaned regularly.
All students are asked to wear a mask to wear upon entry at school and when riding a school bus. Teachers will provide mask breaks. Prior to the break, students needed more reminders of continuing to do this so let’s have a new start again.
Grades 4 - 9 students: Please remember to wear your mask at all times when walking in the classroom and/or hallway and continue to maintain physical distance between one another.
During the spring season we will also be conducting a few more fire drills. The procedures and protocols will be reviewed with staff and students prior to the drill. Thank you!

Message from the City of St. Albert: Woodlands Skatepark
Hello, community partner,
Woodlands Skatepark is one of the City’s premiere recreation facilities, built for the enjoyment and abilities of all users within our community. The City and the RCMP have received complaints that users of the Skatepark are not following the 2 metre physical distancing rules, as required by the province. The City is legally required to follow all provincial public health orders in order for our facilities to remain open and operational and is taking additional steps to ensure all users understand how to use the Skatepark responsibly during the pandemic, while enjoying this great amenity.
We ask that you share this message in the community through your channels.
- Due to the increased use of the Skatepark, please adhere to the following guidelines:
- Maintain at least 2 metres physical distance from other users at all times, especially at the top of the bowl
- If too crowded to keep 2 metres from others, come back at another time
- Limit your stay, so others can enjoy the facility
- Be respectful of any requests by City staff, RCMP or Municipal Enforcement Services
- Everyone has a responsibility to follow public health measures and to keep each other safe.
- Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in additional limitations to this facility.
Thank you,
Daniele Podlubny

Please open the link below to see an important change in the symptoms and isolating:

SAFETY PROTOCOL STUDENT RE-ENTRY REMINDERS
Before coming to school each day, all staff and students must complete the Alberta government’s COVID-19 Information Screening Questionnaire, which is available in multiple languages, to determine whether they can attend or must stay home. The form does not need to be submitted to the office. If your child has any symptoms, contact your school office to let your child’s school know. Everyone who enters a school will see a sign that reminds them to complete the daily COVID-19 Information Screening Questionnaire before entering the building.
Please remember to bring with you all of your books and supplies that are needed for school on Monday morning. Monday is a regular, full day of classes.
Please remember that we have four entrances for students. When you arrive at school please report to the same school door that you were using before the Christmas break.
Students with pre-existing health conditions that cause symptoms of illness should be tested for COVID-19 at least once before returning to school. A negative test will help show that symptoms are related to their pre-existing conditions, and not to COVID-19. This will establish what their baseline for being healthy looks like. Families should notify their school about any pre-existing condition and the symptoms it causes. As long as these symptoms remain the same, the student can attend school.
Approved cleaning protocols have been put in place in all Division buildings. Custodial staff have been trained to identify high touch areas and to know how to clean, sanitize, and disinfect them.
If your child becomes ill at school, your child will be placed in a safe space until you or your emergency designate picks up your child.
Lunch Hour: All students in the elementary and junior high school need to eat their lunch in their own classrooms. We have always had this guideline in place, but students needed a few reminders to adhere to this prior to the break. Students in Junior High who are leaving the building for lunch please follow all safety protocols with masks use, physical distancing and sanitization upon exit and entry.
Junior High - Nutrition break: You are to eat your snack at your desk in your classroom. If you would like to go for a short walk in the school, wear your mask and continue to maintain a physical distance of two metres while walking.
Gym use - Students will have grade cohort assigned time to use the gym. Please listen for the announcements for your day of use.
SIGIS Childcare available
