Principal's Message

Big picture

Oak Creek Families,

As you know, at midnight tonight, the mandate to wear masks at school is going away. We know many families are very excited to take off their masks and see each other's smiles. We also know that many families are not ready to go mask-free just yet. Wearing a mask, or not wearing a mask, are both personal decisions that will be respected here at school. For more information about the change, see the district's note repeated below.

It is also important to note that nothing has changed about when to keep/send ill students home. Please review these document for more information.

And remember to set your clocks ahead this weekend for an extra hour of sunlight in the evenings!

If you have any questions, please see the FAQ section below, or feel free to reach out to myself or Carrie Beach at beachc@loswego.k12.or.us.

Thank you,

Barb Keeton

Masking Requirement Lifted

Below is the latest information from the district office regarding upcoming changes to mask protocols. Students watched the linked video in their classes on Thursday.

District Message:

Lake Oswego School District is lifting face covering requirements in our school settings, including indoor school buildings and buses, effective Saturday, March 12. This decision was made in accordance with state guidance and informed by feedback from our students, teachers, staff, and parents/guardians.

Masks will be optional in LOSD. That means our learning community will support those who opt to continue wearing face coverings, as well as those who choose not to wear face coverings, for whatever reason. When community transmission is high, per CDC metrics, face coverings will be recommended. Our community transmission is currently low (green).

To review the guidance, metrics, input and continued mitigation measures informing the district’s decision, please see the presentation posted on the district website under LOSD COVID-19 Information. Also, click here to watch a recording of the presentation and discussion at the School Board meeting. The video is under School Board/Meetings/Available Archives, Meeting March 7, agenda item 5.3.

A short video explaining what the change in face covering requirements means for our learning community will be shown to all students in class this week. Please click here to watch the video and discuss your household’s plans with your student. We will be updating signage in our facilities and materials on our website to reflect the changes.

Thank you for your support and consideration of each other as we take this step in our pandemic journey.

OC Food Drive is Back!

The Oak Creek Food Drive will be held March 29-April 8. Please bring healthy canned, boxed, or packaged foods to be dropped off at the front of the school. (Large boxes will be marked.) All of the food will go directly to our community through the food pantry at Our Savior's Church. Monetary donations will be given to the Oregon Food Bank. A $10 donation equals 30 meals! We are accepting cash or checks. If you'd like to donate online, please click the link below.

The Third/Fourth Grade Students

Join us for the Doughnut Roll hike on Saturday March 19 from 8am-12pm for a tasty hike to some of LO's most loved donut shops. If you can't make it you are welcome to join a Scout meeting or outing to see if we are a fit for you! Please email Tanya Ross at runtanya@yahoo.com for more information. Please read below for information about our troop.

We are a high-adventure group participating in activities that:
* Encourage scouts to try new things
* Let scouts lead themselves
* Allow scouts to be individuals while also learning to work together as a group
* Build self-confidence
* Serve the community
* Are fun!

We go on outings at least once per month. Past outings include multi-day biking, backpacking, and rafting as well as day trips such as hiking and snowshoeing. We try to attend a different summer camp each year to keep things new.
In addition to monthly outings, we have monthly service projects to give back to the community.

We hold only one fund raising event per year to keep the costs low for outings and registration fees.

Scouts are guided and supported by an active community of volunteers made up of parents of active and former scouts, and adults who are former scouts themselves.

Who can join Troop 432? Anyone! We focus on inclusivity and welcome anyone to join within 11 - 18 years of age. No prior scouting experience is necessary. Our scouts come from diverse backgrounds and religions. Get ready to learn, create long-lasting friendships, and have fun. Come join Troop 432 to gain experiences and skills that last a lifetime.

Please email Tanya Ross at runtanya@yahoo.com for more information.

Book Fair is Coming Back in Person to Oak Creek!

During our conference week of April 4-8 the Scholastic book fair will be held in the library. Parents will be able to load their students’ ewallets from the scholastic website (not yet available, but notice will be made when it is).

Parents may shop during our two conference days on Thursday 4/7 and Friday 4/8.

For more information, contact Darcy Benson Library Tech Assistant bensond@loswego.k12.or.us.

National School Breakfast Week March 7-11!

We celebrate National School Breakfast Week during March 7-11 by encouraging families to participate in our school breakfast program. Having a breakfast meal is the perfect way to help jump-start a morning. We offer whole grain products, fresh fruit, 100% fruit juice, and milk each day. Elementary students can participate by taking home a breakfast, while middle & high school students can join us before school in the cafeteria for a nutritious breakfast. A nutritious breakfast ensures students are fueled for learning every school day.

Cub Scout 4th Grade Webelos Den is Back!

After a brief hiatus, 4th grade Webelos are resuming! We have a crazy plan of accomplishing all the badge requirements at warp speed for the rest of the school year by meeting every other week. We will meet mostly outdoors on Thursday afternoons starting March 3rd.

If you are interested in joining us, please email NatashaORichmond@gmail.com or Jen Jaffe at jenjaffe@gmail.com.

Extended Day Need Survey

LOSD is assessing its extended day service for students in Preschool - Grade 5. We are opening a survey seeking to identify our families’ needs for before and after school care for the 2022-2023 school year. We know that this has been a pain point for many who have had limited options, and we are developing ways to expand this service for all who need it. Your input in the survey is essential in our planning.

Please click here to complete a survey. This survey will remain open through Monday, Mar. 14. Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Employment Opportunities

Are you interested in working at OCE? Do you know someone who might be a good fit? Please check the website to see what is available!

YouthTruth Surveys

Before March 25th, please participate in the Family Survey linked here ytsurvey.org/losdfamily22, which is now open for you to complete. It is helpful to me to hear what we're doing well at Oak Creek, as well as how we can improve.

As part of LOSD’s efforts to create a culture of belonging and to achieve equitable academic outcomes, we will once again administer the Youth Truth survey to all staff, parents, and students in grades 3-12.

The YouthTruth survey is confidential, and responses from children and parents will be held in the strictest confidence. We encourage everyone to participate. This will be an important piece of information for administrators to improve our students' experiences at school.

Elementary students in grades 3-5 will also complete the survey between February 28 and March 25. This is a vital opportunity for students to provide feedback and help guide the school’s improvement plan. The survey will take 15-30 minutes to complete and will be offered during school hours.

*Please note that parents may opt their child out of the survey if they would like. Click here for the opt-out form. For more information, visit the YouthTruth website: youthtruthsurvey.org

Elementary Boundary Review Community

LOSD is planning boundary changes to balance enrollment at Lake Grove and Oak Creek to ensure students have adequate spaces and resources for equitable educational experiences. The Elementary Boundary Review Committee, charged with determining how the boundary lines are redrawn, has arrived at its recommendation.

Boundary "Option Pink" was selected by the committee, informed by input and feedback from our learning community. The committee's recommendations, which will include special considerations for rising 5th graders and suggestions for supporting those impacted by the transition, will be presented to the School Board at the meeting on Monday, March 7. Anticipate the School Board taking action on the recommendations at its public session on Monday, April 11.

Information about the boundary review process, including a map of Option Pink, is available on the district homepage Trending Topics, Elementary Boundary Review 2022.

Lost and Found

Please label your student's coats, water bottles, etc with their first and last name so we can return them before they get to our lost and found collection. Please look at the picture below and stop by if you notice something that is your child's. Please help by labeling all items. We will do our best to return labeled items directly to the student. Thank you!

This is for new students who have never enrolled in Lake Oswego before and for returning students who are not currently enrolled but will re-enroll for next year. Registration is online through ParentVUE. Parents do not need to register students for 2022-23 who are currently attending during the 2021- 22 school year.

Upcoming Health Lessons

Our teachers use the adopted Health Curriculum, The Great Body Shop, to teach the required Oregon Health Standards to our students. THE GREAT BODY SHOP is a comprehensive health education curriculum which is sequential, developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, and medically accurate. The lessons align with Oregon’s Health Education Standards and are embedded with social-emotional learning. Watch your classroom teacher's newsletter for upcoming topics. If you would like to review the health curriculum, please contact the school office. More information, including an opt-out form if needed, can be found on the District website.

Counselor Corner

Big picture

Dear OCE Families,

This month through our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons, we will be introducing the character trait of HONESTY. As a school community, we will be examining how HONESTY looks, sounds, and feels. During our lessons, we will be referencing this definition:

HONESTY: Living truthfully in your words, actions and thoughts.

HONESTY is not about just telling the truth. It is about living a life that is thoughtful and clear about what we believe is good and just. It’s about making sure what we think is kind and worthwhile also lines up with what we say and what we do. In March, we will talk about the cost of dishonesty and what it does to our bodies and minds. Further, we will connect how HONESTY and KINDNESS are closely related traits.

We have opportunities throughout each day where we can either choose to be truthful, or choose to be untruthful through either our words, actions, or thoughts. As we learn about the importance of HONESTY, we will also understand that being truthful isn’t always the easy choice, but it’s always the right (expected) choice. Students will learn about integrity and the importance of being honest with themselves. This month we will have challenging, but rewarding conversations and as always, we appreciate you partnering with us.

It’s purpose is to provide a way to communicate with families about events and activities at Oak Creek as well as tools to help people stay connected. All schools in the Lake Oswego School District use DirectorySpot for this purpose. It can also serve as a way to look up class lists by teacher and as an online family directory.

You can access the directory, once you have your account and password set up,via the internet here or via the Android or Apple app.

For your security, the directory is by invite only. As a new family to Oak Creek, you should have received an email on how to set up your account. LOSD District News

Big picture

We have made all of our COVID-19 information easier to find on our district and school websites. Look for the new LOSD COVID-19 Information graphic (above) and find information about guidance, protocols, notifications and more.

Included is a new COVID-19 Dashboard, which notes all active cases in each school currently. Active cases are people who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and are currently in their 5-day isolation period. Once the isolation period is complete, the case is removed from the dashboard. The dashboard is updated with exposure notices.

Also included is the recording of LOSD's Information Session about exposures and quarantining. We anticipate making these Information Sessions regular events to make sure we address all of your questions and concerns. Look forward to notices about upcoming sessions.

"I Love Lake Oswego" Clothing Closet Open to Entire Community!

I Love Lake Oswego Clothing Closet has received an overwhelming amount of support and donation during the pandemic. We want to give back to our community and encourage our community to lean on us not for just hard times, but for up cycling, sustainability, and for our environment. In the past the closet was just for students, and since the pandemic we have opened our doors to anyone within our community.
