Mar Vista Parent Newsletter
Week of November 23, 2020
Dear Families,
Thank you all for your participation at Parent Teacher Conferences last week. Your partnership in your child's education is paramount to their success in school both academically and socially. If you have questions or concerns about your child's progress as we move into the winter months with extended distance learning, please contact your child's teacher or the school administration for support.
Please support the Mar Vista Virtual Auction brought to you by the Mar Vista Parent Club (MVPs). This year it is a joint event with Valencia Elementary. Please go to this link to view the items and to support Mar Vista. More information is below.
Also, thank you for taking the YouthTruth Survey! I've just learned that the surveys won't close officially until Tuesday 11/24, so if you still need to complete it, there's a bit more time! Again, it takes about 15 minutes and is a huge factor in how we direct our attention toward school improvement. We appreciate your feedback!
I am wishing each and every one of you the very best on this Thanksgiving. I am thankful for the Mar Vista community, the staff, families and children that make this such a special place. I hope you will all find a way to stay safe while sharing special time with one another over this holiday week.
Warmest regards,
Stephanie Monroe
PVUSD Important Announcement from 11/16
Mr. J's Academic Coordinator Update
Hi Families,
This week we will focus on gratitude for the Kindness Challenge. Students are asked to share things about their family that they are grateful for, and you can certainly model this for them as well!
I am grateful for how hard the students are working and how well they are adapting to the changes in learning experienced this year, and I am grateful for how supportive you all have been throughout this process!
Remember, students can also work to complete any of these acts of kindness each day: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1k0kD5TX1OS8sApoYotLo8f8l9Vs-QhQr/view?usp=sharing
Thank you for your support in spreading kindness throughout our community!
Students will continue to work on unit 3 in Benchmark for language arts this week. This is a unit more focused on informational reading.
I also want to encourage all 3rd-6th grade students to complete at least 45-60 minutes per week on the MAP Accelerator program. Students can access this through Clever. This program is designed to support students in math at their level (based on the MAP assessment) and I have found great success when students regularly use it. Here is a video I made showing how students can access this: https://youtu.be/1FOUol1FGH8

YouthTruth Family Survey
Update: The survey is still open until 11/24!
Please give ~15 minutes of your time to complete an online survey that will help us improve Mar Vista School. We have asked YouthTruth – a nonprofit organization that supports hundreds of schools and districts across the county – to conduct an anonymous survey on our behalf.
Please take the survey before it closes at midnight on November 24th by clicking this link: ytsurvey.org/pvusdfamily20
Please note:
· The survey needs to be completed in one sitting.
· We ask that one member of each household fill out the survey.
· If you have more than one child who attends the same school, you may respond to the survey multiple times - one time per child.
· If you write any comments, please do not include your name or anything else that might identify you. Your responses are anonymous, and they will be combined with the responses of other parents and guardians before being shared back with school and district leadership.
We sincerely thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. Your response is incredibly valuable to us.
If you have any questions about the survey, or our plans for how we will use your feedback, please contact me at stephanie_monroe@pvusd.net

They purchased Zearn for us and I have to say it has been a HUGE support for my math program. I also appreciate the $400 classroom funds because I have been purchasing chapter book sets for my class. I also really appreciate Ashley continuing on being treasurer with her full time job. -Miss Risa

Bookshop Santa Cruz Holiday Book Drive
From Bookshop Santa Cruz:
Local public school libraries always count on new books from Bookshop’s annual Holiday Book Drive to increase and update their collections, but between Covid-19 and the recent wildfires, they need our help more than ever. Many books that were checked out never made it back to schools, so libraries’ inventories are low while the need for books is high.
"Our school library lost many books in our collection in the spring when students were not allowed on campus even to return books. Many 8th graders moved on to the high school and students moved away without having the usual process to return books at the end of the school year." —Martha Dyer, Librarian, Mission Hill Middle School
Donations in any amount are so appreciated!
Donations will be distributed by Santa Cruz City Schools, Pajaro Valley Unified School District, Live Oak School District, and Scotts Valley Unified School District.
Bookshop's Holiday Book Drive is cosponsored by the Santa Cruz Warriors and the Good Times. You can contribute by making a monetary donation to school libraries and classrooms, or specific books at a discount to donate. Our book drive will run online and in-store through December 31st.
Please respond to the Annual Notification to Parents...
