September 2023 Issue
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month — a time of year we and other organizations honor children and survivors affected by pediatric cancer in order to raise awareness and continue the research and treatment of the disease. Childhood cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease for children under the age of 14. September was proclaimed National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by President Obama in 2012.
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Our Kahla Knights will explore and appreciate the rich cultural history of Hispanic-Americans, and shine a light on the contributions and achievements of Hispanic-Americans to what the United States has become.
A Message from Principal Carroll
Dear Kahla Parents,
I want to extend my sincere gratitude for a wonderful first week of school. The positive energy and enthusiasm from both students and parents have set a promising tone for the year ahead.
As we dive deeper into this academic year, I would like to reiterate a few important points that I previously communicated. These reminders are essential to maintaining a safe and nurturing learning environment for all our students:
1. Doors open at 7:25am each day. For car riders, I kindly ask that you arrange appropriate drop-off times, considering the safety and supervision of your child. Any drop off significantly earlier than this time, other than extracurricular practices, is strongly discouraged as supervision is limited until school officially opens.
2. It is essential that car riders are promptly picked up at dismissal time, which is 3:10pm. This ensures their safety and continued supervision. Your adherence to this schedule is greatly appreciated.
In addition to these reminders, I kindly request that you remind your student of the following guidelines:
1. Students are required to wear their ID badges around the neck with the appropriate grade level lanyard daily. These ID badges are mandatory for all aspects of the building, including riding the bus in the afternoon. Students without a permanent or temporary ID badge will not be permitted to ride the bus.
2. Starting September 5th, our tardy policy will go into effect for all students. Timeliness is crucial for an optimal learning experience. Please encourage your child to arrive at school and each class on time to maximize their opportunity for success.
3. We are excited to announce incentives for perfect attendance and students without tardies, which will begin in the first marking period and continue throughout the school year. These incentives serve as a motivation for students to prioritize attendance and punctuality and to foster a strong commitment to education.
4. A healthy start is a key component of a successful school day. We strongly encourage all students to take advantage of eating a FREEbreakfast at school daily. A nutritious breakfast provides them with the energy and focus needed to excel in their academic pursuits. Breakfast and lunch is FREE for all students this year at Kahla!
Lastly, I would like to remind you of our Open House event on Thursday, September 14, 2023 from 5 PM to 7 PM. We invite and encourage you to attend and meet your child's teachers.
Thank you once again for your ongoing support and collaboration. We look forward to a year filled with growth, achievement, and memorable experiences. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
Warmest regards,
Joshua Carroll
