Lloyd Road School Newsletter
December 2016
Principal's Message:
Dear Parents/Guardians:
As the weather gets colder and possible snow arrives, it may mean more inside recess days unfortunately. We will usually have outdoor recess as long as the ground is dry and the temperature (with windchill) is above freezing so we emphasized to the students to dress warm as it gets colder.
Assistant Principal Mrs. Olsen and I met with all students during a recess period to start
December and shared some helpful recess reminders they can keep in mind. The reminders are:
1. Students can bring in a piece of equipment from home to play a game during outside recess as long as it is not a hard ball or other item that could hurt someone. We said students should run their idea by their teacher first before bringing it in.
2. Students can bring in games to play during inside recess also but should also run the idea by their teacher as well. We mentioned that electronic games should not be brought in and playing on tablets and phones is also not permitted. We prefer games in which the students can play together and socialize during the short amount of recess time they have.
In our recess review meeting with the students we also shared how recess and lunch tend to be the areas with the most conflict due to the less structured environment. We discussed good decision making skills, avoiding games that involve touching each other, and proper ways to handle conflict. During any time of the school day we reminded students that if a conflict arises and they feel they need help resolving it their first step is to talk with the adult that is directly supervising them at the time whether it is the lunch/recess aide or teacher in their special or content area class. We shared that conflict is a natural part of life but how we handle it should be looked at as a learned skill just like all other skills students learn in and out of school.
Have a happy holiday season!

Counselor News:
Two of our classes are piloting a new Anti-Bullying program. Both Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. Mammano’s classes have been following a curriculum created by NJ State Bar Foundation. The students and staff have been very receptive to it and appear to be enjoying the various lessons taught on bullying and character education.
Have a safe and Happy Holiday!

For example; toothpaste, deck of cards, body wash – everything will under $5. Participation is voluntary and provides our children an opportunity to help those within our communities.
Donations are to be collected within each classroom the week of December 5th- December 9th. All items will be donated to a local shelter. If you have any questions, please email Allison Sorokin at allison.sorokin@gmail.com
