Volunteer Opportunities--- Earn Community Service Hours
Volunteer for Friends of the Animal Shelter Holiday Fair
FOTAS is planning a new major event which presents opportunities for Ashland HS students, starting immediately and through the end of the year. Deck The Paws Holiday Fair, a community-wide event, will be held on December 7 at the Phoenix Plaza Civic Center (PPCC). The fair will be open to the public, free admission. There are three main components:
· Individuals and families can bring their pets for photo portraits with Santa Paws and Cat-Elf.
· A wide array of hand-crafted gifts and décor will be on sale.
· Attendees can enjoy a reasonably priced, nutritious hot soup lunch.
Ashland HS students can participate in many different ways:
Make handcrafted items – We are collecting wonderful creations to sell at the fair. Wooden, woven, painted, sculpted – you name it, just create it! Students can join the “FOTAS Elves” group on Facebook and review photos and how-to posts for inspiration.
Organize and run your own table – Get a class or club to work together to stock and staff an Ashland HS table at the fair. In addition to selling items for the benefit of FOTAS, you can present information and displays about school projects (especially nice if animal related).
Help with photography – We need 2-6 students skilled in photo editing and computers to prepare and print 5x7” glossy prints of family and pet portraits at the fair. We will have one training session (1-2 hours) in September, and a full rehearsal for all participants in the photo project in October. Students can also work as roaming event photographers. After the fair we will need help organizing and uploading photo files.
Help with publicity – Dozens of event posters need to be distributed to locations throughout Ashland and beyond.
Singing & entertainment – We will have caroling and performances on the plaza at PPCC. Canopies and patio heaters will be set up if the weather requires. The Ashland HS Choir is invited to perform, and other groups and even individuals (jugglers? magicians?) are encouraged to sign up.
Paint faces – Students who paint or enjoy doing makeup are needed to do face painting. They will need to develop 6-8 sample faces on poster board, to display at the fair, and take shifts 11AM-4PM. Brushes and paint can be supplied.
Work at the fair – We will start setting up the fair at 7:30AM on December 7. Students with their own vehicles can shuttle boxes of merchandise and supplies to PPCC from a nearby staging location. We will need a small army of volunteers to unpack these boxes, set up tables and displays, and decorate the venue – all by 11AM. And then at 4-6PM we need to pack it all up and leave PPCC sparkling clean! Students do not need to commit for the entire day – just join the morning or afternoon team.
For more information or to sign up for a Deck The Paws job, contact Laura at 458-226-0600 or laura.ahearn@standfordalumni.org
