For 8th Grade Families
Introducing: The King Philip Chess Program!
All students in grades 6 through 8 who are interested in learning to play chess are invited to participate in the introductory session, which will include a program orientation meeting for parents. The program will hold an introductory session on December 15 at 6:00pm to determine students’ interest for a permanent school year-long program for 2015-2016. This would be a fee-based offering.
Weather Precautions
In the event of an early closing, it is best for your child(ren) to have a safe and secure place to go. Review the plan you have put in place that identifies where your child needs to go if school closes early. Take the time to write this plan in your child's agenda for a quick and easy reference.
As it gets colder, our diesel buses will be idling more often in the bus loops. This is necessary to keep them running and is under strict guidelines with the transportation and busing company. If you are picking your child up from school during the winter months, we encourage you to limit vehicle idling on school property to help the environment.

Heifer's Disaster Rehabilitation Fund
Congratulations to 8th grade student Rose Kitz!
This past September, King Philip 8th grade student, Rose Kitz, was invited to participate in the Global Citizenship Festival in New York City. She represented Heifer International as their Youth Ambassador, chosen for her work on her Quest project last year which resulted in raising over $7,000 so far toward disaster relief in Nepal, including sending an ark full of 16 types of animals! She stood on stage alongside Queen Rania of Jordan and Salma Hayek-Pinault. What an amazing experience this has been for her.
Click here for a short video clip of the Youth Ambassadors.
Rose is continuing her fundraising efforts to reach her goal of $10,000 to help the people of Nepal through Heifer's Disaster Rehabilitation Fund. You will find Rose with a table set up at our upcoming school concerts for grades 6 & 7. Please consider a donation to this wonderful cause. Water for Sudan Project
We recently read A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, in which she writes about the life of one of Sudan’s lost boys, Salva Dut. After reading the non-fiction novel, we have developed a great concern for the water crisis affecting so many on the continent of Africa. The response to this book was overwhelmingly one of concern as well as questioning how we can help.
After several days of research, we uncovered startling statistics regarding the lack of access to clean water that so many people in developing countries face. In addition to researching statistical data to support that there is most definitely a water crisis, we also researched ways in which we, a middle school in West Hartford, Connecticut, could help those most affected. We have found that “1 in 9 people around the world don't have access to clean, safe drinking water”, and we would like to do something about it.
We would like to raise $3000 to co-sponsor the purchase of a drilling rig and the actual drilling of a well in a village in South Sudan.
Please consider helping us reach our goal by going to https://www.gofundme.com/73bztmuc and donating or by sending in cash/check (made out to KPMS- Water Challenge).
Thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
Turquoise Team Students
