LS CARES: Lee's Summit CARES, a longtime district partner, is offering for the first time some grant funding to assist with connecting our students in service-oriented endeavors. Application is linked HERE. If you are interested in submitting your app for consideration, please complete it, secure your building principal's signature and scan/email to Susan Coffman at sdcoffman@rediscovermh.org or mail it to the ReDiscover office at 901 NE Independence Ave, Lee's Summit, MO 64086 to be received by September 1. At this time there is not a fillable online version of the form.
Nutrition Services: Nutrition Services practices will remain as they were last year. They will not take any student's tray away to sub a baked potato or cheese sandwich. They will follow the new district policy and we will remind students of the need to bring money or they may have a choice of a baked potato the next day. If the students comes through the next day, nutrition services will just remind the student they need to bring money. The student will continue to receive the meal/sides they choose.
Partners In Education: As you plan your events for the upcoming school year, please consider utilizing the resources of our Partners In Education to positively reinforce the curricular concepts you're teaching. Whether you're needing a classroom speaker, someone to talk about interviews do's and don'ts, a guest reader, a judge for a project/contest, or an extra set of hands, please share those requests with Laura Maxwell. She'll include your request in upcoming PIE newsletters. Partners will contact your school directly.
Read Naturally Live: After Fall assessments, please email Barb with the names of students needing a license with Read Naturally Live. If you have Tier 2 students from last year that you already know will need this resource, you may provide Barb with student names now. Please be sure that these referrals come from Reading Specialists and are for reg ed and intervention students only. SPED referrals should be processed through Jennifer Lazenby.
Red Ribbon Week: LSR7 will observe Red Ribbon Week the week of October 22-26, 2018. Greenwood Elementary will be the host school for the all-city kickoff rally/program Monday, October 22 at 9 a.m. This year's nationwide theme is Life is Your Journey - Travel Drug Free.
Schoology Migration: The SBG Google Site has migrated to each grade level's curriculum schoology site. The RtI Google site will be located on each grade level's curriculum site before benchmarking.
From Technology: The laptop TestNav upgrade is now available for teachers to install themselves. Matt Hughey sent out instructions to the building techs to provide to their teachers that need TestNav either installed or upgraded. Here are those instructions.
As for the chromebook TestNav upgrade, that updates itself anytime the developers make a change to the app, and it is automatically pushed out to all of the chromebooks.

Compass Connections
"Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results."– Andrew Carnegie
The Innovator's Mindset: Empower Learning, Unleash Talent, and Lead a Culture of Creativity by: George Couros
*“Innovation” is a common term in many educational circles today. But what does it actually mean – especially in the terms of education? In George's book, he defines innovation as: a way of thinking that creates something new and better.
*Innovation can come from either “invention” (something totally new), or “iteration” (a change on something that already exists), but if it does not meet the idea of “new and better,” it is not innovative. That means that change for the sake of change is never good enough.
*Innovation is a way of thinking. It is a way of considering concepts, processes and potential outcomes; it is not a thing, task or even, technology.
*As Carl Bass, CEO of Autodesk, explains in his TEDx talk, The New Rules of Innovation, “Innovation is the process by which we change the world … It’s the practical application of ideas and technologies to make new and better things.”
The Energy Bus by: Jon Gordon
*What’s the first thing you want to do to make a positive change?
Points to Consider:
• Positive energy is the positive thoughts and emotions you think and feel and share with others. It consists of smiles, laughter, gratitude, trust, faith, and joy.
• Smiling makes you feel happier.
• Being grateful makes you feel more positive and happier.
• Positive people are happier people. Positive people are healthier and are also better at overcoming obstacles. They also make more friends and are more successful.
The league of visionary educators what's l.o.v.e. got to do with it?
What's L.O.V.E. got to do with it?
Are you looking for opportunities to grow and sprint out ahead of the vision for our schools? Do you want to contribute to the vision of the Lee’s Summit School District and collaborate in purposeful conversation with the Superintendent? Our teachers’ voices are important to the story of our schools and we are looking for those voices to make an impact. The future of school is waiting for your opinion.
Dr. Carpenter mentioned his new teacher advisory council during convocation this week and we are thrilled to announce the launch of the League of Visionary Educators (L.O.V.E.). Futurist Gerd Leonhard says we are in a digital transformation of exponential change. Are you driving change or are you being driven by it? And do you want to impact that change?
All current R-7 teachers who are passionate about our district's growth and our district's message are encouraged to apply. Do you want to influence the conversation in LS R-7? If so, this is the right forum for you. You'll L.O.V.E. it!
For more information and to apply for the League, please visit the Superintendent's webpage. Note that applications are due by September 7.
RACE FOR THE FUTURE:
We hope to see MANY of you at our Foundation's Race for the Future 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Oct. 13. You can register online! You can print a hard copy of the registration form and submit the form and a check to the Foundation Office at the Stansberry Leadership Center.
