Read Across America
reading celebration news for Harvey families
It's time to celebrate reading!
Next week is Read Across America week! We would like to use the week to celebrate the fun of reading in a few small but fun ways. In recent years, the National Education Association has moved away from just focusing on Dr. Seuss and his stories and toward a focus more on diverse stories, characters, authors, and readers.
Dress-Up Days
Listed below are our dress-up days, along with some reading suggestions.
Monday- Read Across My Shirt- Wear a shirt with (school-appropriate) writing.
Tuesday- Reading Gives Us Superpowers! Dress up as your favorite super hero. Read about one of your superheroes.
Wednesday- Reading Rainbow Day- wear as many colors as you can, or wear your favorite color(s). Read a book with diverse characters and/or storyline, and/or one written or illustrated by a diverse author or illustrator.
Thursday- Curl Up and Read Day- wear sweats or school-appropriate pajamas, robes, and enjoy some extra fun time reading.
Friday- no school due to parent/teacher conferences
Fox in Socks Drive
Socks are some of the most requested items for homeless shelters. To go with this book, we are recommending donations of socks of all kinds and travel-sized toiletries to the Women and Children's Horizons through the end of March. They have a drop-off site at 2525 63rd St, Kenosha, WI 53143. Items needed include: shower gel, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, small brushes and combs, razors, and shaving cream.
Guess Who's Reading?
We will be putting together a slideshow of "mystery readers" (Grant teachers and staff). Each teacher or staff member will be hiding most of their face behind a book and students will have the opportunity to identify each mystery reader. This will be done in class.
