MWE Friday Focus
Week of September 26 - 30
Construction Update
Thank you all so much for your patience as we worked through communicating with you about not being able to have school for students today.
We learned that an underground water line was hit and the line is 14-16 feet underground.
As I receive updates, I will forward them on to you.
MWE Communication
These are the ways we will communicate @MWE:

MW Milers - begins September 27
MWE Milers will begin this Tuesday September 27th at 7:30 a.m. Please meet at the gazebo on the SparkPark. Milers is a chance for students to blow off a a little steam and stretch their legs before their school day begins.
We limit Milers to grades 1-5 only. This not only helps keep the number of kids on the track down but also helps keeps the little ones safe.
We run Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 7:30 a.m. and round the kids up for class at 7:50 a.m. We provide a small snack (a small orange or little granola bar) for after the run.
We do not run if it is raining or the temperature is below 45 degrees.
In the Spring we will encourage the kids to train and sign up for the Running for the Arts (and run with them!!) And at the end of the year we have a very informal race and medals for everyone.
Picture Day - September 29
Individual Picture Order Forms have been sent home and all students will have their picture taken. (These pictures will be in the yearbook)
If you would like to order pictures please purchase packages online or send a check with the order form to your student’s classroom by picture day.
Make Checks payable to Interstate Photography.
Online www.inter-state.com/order with Order Code 09882JA
Picture retakes will be on November 10.
If your child is absent on September 29th, they can taken their picture on November 10.
Fundraiser - order online until September 30
Thank you so much to all who ordered from the Mixed Bag fundraiser! It has been a huge success so far!
You may continue to place online orders through Friday, September 30 - your students and your teacher will receive credit for these orders!
Orders received after September 30th through the end of 2016 will continue to benefit MWE, but your student and teacher will not receive incentives for these orders.
A special thanks to Melanie White, Brandi Paullo, Heather Craig, Kelly Williams, Traci Mundwiller, and Sarah Laird for all of their help!

Odyssey of the Mind - From Donni Blair, Sponsor
As of yesterday, we officially have SEVEN Odyssey of the Mind teams. That is just under 10% of the school! Last year, of all 46 teams in Spring Branch schools, including middle and high schools, the school that had the most teams had six (Frostwood).
Counselor’s Connection
Spring Branch ISD is fortunate to have a Developmental Guidance Program where all children have the opportunity to enhance the skills necessary to help them become responsible, successful learners. Our counseling program is based on the Texas Guidance Curriculum. The Texas Guidance Curriculum is designed to help students acquire age-appropriate knowledge and skills within the following content areas:
· Self confidence development
· Motivation to achieve
· Decision making, goal setting, planning, and problem solving
· Interpersonal effectiveness
· Communication skills
· Cross-cultural effectiveness
· Responsible behaviors
The focus of the counseling program is to help build a supportive and caring environment so that students will achieve academic and personal success. The counselor is available to help parents and teachers understand the normal developmental growth stages of children, as well as to work with students in classroom guidance lessons, small groups and individually. Students may self-refer or be referred by teachers, parents or other school personnel.
Full implementation of the guidance curriculum is achieved through a partnership between the counselor, staff members, and parents. By addressing the intellectual and emotional needs of students, it is our hope that each child will have a rewarding school experience.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have regarding your child.
Sincerely,
Lynne Luberger, Counselor

Student Council News
The Student Council helps promote a sense of community and school spirit at Meadow Wood. In addition, the Council plans and assists in the implementation of school wide service projects that support our character education initiatives.
Serving as a Student Council representative is an honor and a privilege. Student Council representatives have satisfactory grades, follow the Eagle SOAR (SOAR: Safety, Ownership, Attitude and Respect) expectations, and are seen as positive role models by others.
Student Council is comprised of 4th and 5th grade students. The 4th graders that served last year will continue to serve this year. In addition, each 4th and 5th grade homeroom will select two representatives from the class.
Student Council representatives are selected through a two-step process involving classmates and teachers. Student input is gathered by having each child complete a character traits rubric. The rubric reflects the SOAR expectations.
The rubric allows students to identify the people they believe follow the guidelines most of the time. Teachers then review the responses from the class and determine which students’ names appear most frequently. From that list, the teachers make the final decision.
Be watching for more exciting news about the many ways that Student Council contributes to our school and community.

Be Brave, Be Bold, Go Gold
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Gold is the official awareness ribbon color. This month is a time to honor children and families affected by the disease and rally support for groundbreaking research that can save children’s lives. The Go Gold Fund was created to combat and transform the current landscape of childhood cancer by raising awareness of funding concerns. The National Cancer Institute spends 96% of its budget on adult cancers and only 4% on childhood cancers.
Brave individuals inspire others, Bold action creates change and Going Gold raises awareness of childhood cancer and increases funding for the cause. If you would like to donate to the Go Gold Fund, you can do so by going to GoGoldFund.org or GoGold.org.
Although SBISD is partnering with the Go Gold Fund this year, this organization and its activities are not related to or sponsored by the Spring Branch Independent School District.
