A Note from the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It was great to see so many families at Muffins with Moms and Donuts with Dads during National School Choice Week. Thank you for taking a moment to visit our school.
Our Science Fair STEM Festival is Saturday, February 8th from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM here at school. Students have worked very hard on their amazing science projects. The Perot Museum will be our special guest to show exciting science demos and offer fun hands-on activities. This is a family event. Please come out and join us!
Later that same evening, PTSO will host an art auction at 6:30 PM in the gym. We would love for all families and community members to come out to support our PTSO and students.
Thank you,
Have a wonderful week.

American Heart Month & Omega-3’s Impact on Hearts
The Science of Omega-3s: Omega-3 essential fatty acids cannot be made in your body. Therefore, your source of Omega-3s must come from food or supplements. Supplements can be labeled as EPA (marine sources), DHA (marine sources), or ALA (plant sources). EPA plays a major role to support health and may reduce inflammation in the body, while DHA plays a key role in brain development and function.
Food Sources of Omega-3s: Fatty fish, such as salmon, is one of the most concentrated sources of EPA and DHA. Other fish include Bluefin, albacore tuna, black cod, rainbow trout, and mackerel. Other sustainable sources include herring, sardines, and anchovies. You may also choose plant-based options including: chia seeds, ground flaxseed, flaxseed oils, seaweed, soybeans, and walnuts.
The Impact of Omega-3s on Your Heart: Eating two to three servings per week of oily fish rich in omega-3s is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Fish oil, depending on the dosage, has been shown to modestly reduce blood pressure and reduce triglycerides. Some studies have shown that young children who eat fish once or more per week have a lower risk of developing eczema. There are multiple benefits to consuming foods high in Omega-3s. The American Heart Association recommends healthy adults consume at least two servings per week.
Omega-3s Supplementation and Safety: If you are vegetarian or vegan, you can supplement with microalgae instead of fish oil. Otherwise, the recommendation on fish oil dosage is different based on the person. The first choice and recommendation is to consume the Omega-3s through the natural food sources. If this is not an option for you, a range of 3-9 grams of fish oil per day has had effective results in decreasing LDL blood cholesterol levels in some people. As always, consult your doctor for their best recommendation for your individual situation.
Why a Gluten Free Diet May be Bad for Healthy Kids
There are several problems for children without a medical issue being fed gluten-free products including:
- They could be missing out on important nutrients
- They may be getting excessive amounts of fat and sugar
- They may be exposed to higher levels of toxins such as arsenic
Many parents search the internet when their children have a health problem and often find the recommendation is to switch to a gluten-free diet. If you suspect your child may have Celiac Disease or a wheat allergy, don’t change your child's diet right away. Schedule a Doctor’s appointment and let them direct you to the next steps to take. If you remove gluten from your child’s diet, your doctor may have a hard time diagnosing Celiac Disease or an intolerance, because the signs and symptoms may have disappeared.
You Art What you eat
The Texas Department of Agriculture’s (TDA’s) You Art What You Eat statewide student art contest engages students K-12 in learning about healthy nutrition. The art contest encourages students to use their imagination to illustrate healthy school meals while incorporating TDA’s theme.
The winning entries inspire designs for cafeteria posters, social media ads, flyers and other
resources that will be displayed in schools across Texas during National School Lunch Week
and School Breakfast Week. TDA focuses on challenging kids and staff to try new foods
offered in the cafeteria every day through the National School Lunch Program and School
Breakfast Program. Each school that offers these programs has an opportunity to celebrate
nutritious meals at school during National School Lunch Week in the fall, and School Breakfast Week in the spring.
The original artwork from the winners and runners up will be displayed in the State Capitol
each spring. Specific dates can be found online at www.SquareMeals.org/ArtContest.
Art Contest Categories
Students can enter their artwork in one or both of the following categories:
o National School Lunch Week category – include healthy school lunch items into art
o School Breakfast Week category –incorporate healthy school breakfast items into art

o Secondary (6th grade – 12th grade)
