News and Info from HCS -- March 9, 2023
From Your Superintendent
Hornet Nation,
One of the items on our PreK-12 plate is continued work around building the profile of a Harrison Community Schools graduate. In other words, what does it mean for someone to spend 13 years learning with us? How are we, in partnership with you, ensuring that every graduate is career and/or college ready, with the skills to earn a self-sustaining wage and participate in learning beyond high school (trade, on-the-job, college/university, etc.)?
I recently shared with our staff a foundational piece to jump-start our internal conversations -- this 2021 graphic from the state of Michigan. It is part of Michigan's "Top Ten in Ten" strategy to improve educational experiences and outcomes for all students. Here in HCS, we are looking to explicitly recognize where our strengths lie, and where we have more "building out and up" to do in the areas represented on the graphic.
If you are a Hornet alum, we would love to hear how your PreK-12 experience here prepared you for life after high school, and what you wish might have been different. Here is a link to a short survey; please feel free to share it widely. The form will collect your email address in case we would like to follow back up with some clarifying questions, but will be used for no other purpose.
As always, please reach out with any questions, comments, or suggestions.
In partnership and with Hornet Pride,
Judy

How to help young people limit screen time — and improve their body image
In this recent article, Allison Aubrey details how too much screen time on social media platforms can impact teen mental health. Tips in the article for all ages include:
- Curating feeds
- Scheduling one-day-a-week breaks
- Turning off notifications
- Using "old" screen time for "new" real-life activities
- Connecting with those that share your values

Health Information
COVID-19 protocols for positive cases, staff or student:
- With a positive case, the person must isolate for 5 days and not attend or be in school. In counting those days, the first date of symptoms (or the test, if no symptoms) is day 0.
- The COVID-positive person may return to school on Day 6, assuming symptoms are subsiding. We recommend, but do not require, masking for days 6-10 in school.
We are also attaching a handy resource from public health officials that provides guidance on when to keep a child home from school in a variety of illness-related situations.
