Upcoming Dates to Note
- Monday, February 15th: Schools closed for the holiday
- Tuesday, February 16th: Kindergarten Open House (see above)
- Wednesday, February 17th: Synchronous Learning Day (see below)
- Wednesday, February 24th: Staff development/workday: No School
Synchronous Learning Day
Due to the holiday and schools being closed on Monday, February 15th, the schedule shifts, and Wednesday turns into a full class day instead of just Advisory/homeroom. Glance at this calendar and make sure you fill out the attendance forms for your classes on the right days!
Erin’s Law (OAR 581- 022-1440)
In 2015, the Oregon legislature passed Senate Bill 856, also known as Erin’s Law. Erin’s Law requires the development and adoption of child sexual abuse prevention instruction for students in kindergarten through 12th grade in all Oregon public schools.
Students will receive a minimum of four age appropriate and medically accurate instructional lessons each year in grades K-12:
Techniques to recognize sexual abuse
Skills to tell a trusted adult
The instructional lessons for grades K-8 are embedded within the health curriculum.
Because not all high school students are engaged in a health class to receive this instruction, schools have to identify an alternative delivery model to provide the lessons. At FLEX, the high school lessons will be delivered through our Advisory classes.
Please click on either the Middle School or High School link for a more specific explanation of the delivery of Erin’s law for our secondary students (grades 6-12).
The District is undecided about the delivery time and model of Erin’s Law lessons for our elementary students. We will communicate this information to families of elementary students once we have clarification.
7th Grade (Virtual) Field Trip Update
Next week on February 17th and 19th, FLEX Online School 7th graders will take a virtual field trip to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, or OMSI. On our field trip we will travel back in time and learn about 13th-century Mongolia through stories, historical artifacts, and the enduring legacy of one of the world’s most impactful figures, Genghis Khan.
Thank you to those who donated, and to the Beaverton Education Foundation for funding this!
FLEX Online Community Support Organization (our version of the PTO)
Last week we successfully filled all board positions and can now apply for non-profit status. We also need your help! Do you have any experience creating a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization and filing the Oregon paperwork? We would love to hear from you. If you are willing to help, please contact us at flex.focs@gmail.com by Monday, February 15th.
We will continue meeting virtually the 1st Tuesday of each month at 7pm. Next meeting: Tuesday, March 2nd 2021 All parents, partners, grandparents and learning coaches of FLEX Online students are welcome to attend our meetings.
Volunteering with FOCS and FLEX Online School
In order to volunteer (including over Zoom), it is a district policy that you must be approved in BSD’s Better Impact volunteer system.
If you have previously volunteered at a school in BSD and would like to add FLEX to your list of schools please send an email to update_volunteer_locations@beaverton.k12.or.us and request FLEX to be added. (You may also ask for your previous school to be removed).
If you have never volunteered within the Beaverton School District, you will need to create a volunteer account, which includes a background check. Visit the BSD website or you can click on this link Create a Volunteer Account. When creating your profile, list FLEX as your school.
Once you have been cleared to volunteer we will send you an email!
If you have any questions about volunteering, please contact Pam Jeffery at focs.volunteerlead@gmail.com

Meet Our Staff!

Tell Us Your Story! We would love your help to tell the story of our school and the families that make our school community so special. We will use this information on our school website to help other students and families know more about our school. Use our online form to tell your story and even upload a photo if you have one! | Book Bus The Library Book Bus is rolling and bringing school library books to students in their neighborhoods. All BSD students — including FLEX, options and high school students — can check out books from their closest neighborhood stops. Students just need to give their student ID numbers. Find more information, including the bus stops and times here. | Canvas Notifications & Emails Each user in Canvas, including parents and guardians with active ParentVUE accounts, controls their own notifications. We know some of you are being overwhelmed by emails or notifications. You can adjust your notification settings to get what you want, when you want it in Canvas. The Canvas Parent Webinar (above) has information on how to do this. Scan forward to minute 24:34 to hear an intro and then at minute 28:18, the nuts and bolts of notifications are explained. |
