TWHS Orchestra Newsletter

Big picture
It is impossible to believe that this school year is almost over. As I look back over all our accomplishments this year, despite the unprecedented challenges we have faced due to Covid, I could not be more proud. We have accomplished almost as much as we would have in a normal year, despite everything being 10X harder than normal. Your level of work and commitment to the program this year has been truly humbling and awe inspiring for me. Seniors, and Senior Parents, It has been such a pleasure to work with you over the last 4 years and I wish you all nothing but the very best as you move into the next chapter of your lives. I hope you will look back fondly at your time here in the orchestra, and that music will always be in your life. I encourage all of you to keep playing. I hope you come back and visit us at a concert in the future.

However, before we are done with the year, we have our first in person concert of the year. It is incredible to me that our Night at the Movies Concert will be the first time we have performed for a live audience in 18 months. I am so excited that we get to end the year by returning to the stage.

Now as Always please read the entirety of the newsletter as there is a substantial amount of information contained in it.

Parents as we start making plans for next year, we really need your help. We have several open positions on our booster board, and also need people to help with specific events and activities.

The Booster Club helps both TWHS and McC Orchestras by providing support and staffing for concerts, events, managing finances, fundraising and more. If you’re interested in joining our Booster Club next year, please fill out this short survey on your areas of interest.

Hello senior parents,

With graduation just around the corner, and considering all the obstacles we have had his year, we are trying to make the final months in orchestra as normal as can be.

To complete a senior slide show for the upcoming banquet in May, I am going to need baby pictures along with 3-4 orchestra pictures of your senior. (Total of about 5-6 pictures)

Please email me 5-6 pictures (jpeg format) of your child. Include 1-2 baby pictures and several more recent “orchestra” photos. These can be school pictures, pictures with their instrument, etc. Please include their name in the subject line. Please also include a graduation/senior picture and where they are going to school.

I need these by April 19th so your child can be included. If I do not get them by the deadline, they will not be included. Email them to

If you have any questions, please reach out to me.

We are so excited to welcome you all back to a live in person concert, however we will have to do some different things than normal.

  • First the seating at all our performances will be limited, and we MUST have an accurate record of who is the audience. Therefore, everyone needs to register for tickets. ALSO ALL THOSE ATTENDING THE CONCERT MUST WEAR A MASK AT ALL TIMES!

  • Secondly we have had to break our concerts into 2 parts:

Philharmonic, Camerata, and Symphony Orchestras will perform at 6:30 PM

Chamber and Concert will perform at 8:00 PM.

We will have to clear the auditorium between each performance, clean, and then seat the next audience.

  • Third, tickets to the evening shows are limited to families of our performer, and each family can register for 2 tickets per student performer. Senior Families can register for up to 4 tickets. Please Make sure to register for tickets to the correct concert.

  • Fourth, we will be live-streaming each concert for those that can not attend.

  • Finally, we will be presenting a Matinee/ Dress Rehearsal of the Magic of Disney Concert (that Chamber and Concert Orchestras are performing) at 2:30 PM. Anyone is welcome to reserve tickets for that( We can seat up to 400 in the auditorium with our Covid restrictions)

Sectionals run through the end of April. All students in Chamber, Concert, and Symphony Orchestras need to attend sectionals.

Mondays: Basses 3:15-4:15

Tuesdays: Symphony Violas 3:15-4 PM, Concert and Chamber Violas 4-4:30 PM

Wednesdays: Symphony Cellos 3:15-4 PM, Concert and Chamber Cellos 4-4:30 PM

Thursdays: Symphony Violins 3:15-4 PM, Concert and Chamber Violins 4-4:30 PM

Attendance at these sectionals is mandatory, and worth 2 major grades over the 9 weeks. Please make every effort to attend. If you have a conflict you can attend the other time for your instrument to receive credit. If you know you must miss because of a school competition, talk to Mr. Michaelson at least 7 days before. Other club meetings or practices, tutoring Sessions, test make ups, work, and routine doctors appointments will not be counted as excused absences. The sooner you talk to Mr. Michaelson about any sectional you need to miss, the better off you will be.

We have had a real problem with late work during the 1st semester, from both in-person and virtual learners. Mrs. Gordon and Mr. Michaelson can no longer spend the time to chase down missing work.

In order to maintain some flexibility and grace for students, but still allow Mrs. Gordon and Mr. Michaelson to retain some of their sanity and do their jobs in a timely fashion, the Updated Late Work Policy will be as follows:

  • Assignments will continue to be due on Fridays at 11:59 PM for all students whether virtual or in person. After that it is late.

  • Students will have until 11:59 PM on Sunday Night following the due date to turn things in with no penalty.

  • From Midnight Monday Morning through 11:59 PM Monday Night 10 points will be deducted.

  • From Midnight on Tuesday Morning through 11:59 PM on Tuesday Night another 20 points will be deducted for a total of 30 points off.

  • At Midnight on Wednesday Morning the assignment will no longer be accepted, and will turn into a zero.

If you have a serious reason for why you will not be able to complete your work within this timeframe, i.e. a death in the family or a hospitalization, please send MR. MICHAELSON an email to discuss.

Orchestra Fees Are Past Due

Orchestra fees were due in September. We still have several families that have not paid or contacted Mr. Michaelson. As you all know, we do minimal fundraisers other than this fee, so it is imperative that every family contribute. Please email Mr. Michaelson at with any concerns or financial issues.

This fee can be paid online through CHARMS under the financial tab. If you need to send a check please contact Mr. Michaelson to make arrangements. Please pay this fee or make payment arrangements as soon as possible.
