UOI 2: Where We Are in Place and Time
Transdisciplinary Theme: An inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between and the interconnections of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives.
Central Idea: Geography affects where and how people choose to live
Key Concepts: Form, Change, and Connection
Lines of Inquiry:
- Maps, the information they provide, and how they’ve changed over time

- The effects of exploration on groups of people
UOI Field Trip
Grades 3-6 will be going on a field trip to the Sackler/Freer Art Galleries to view “The Art of the Quran: Treasures from the Museum of Turkish & Islamic Art” Exhibit on November 17, 2016 from 10am – 1:45pm. This exhibit showcases sixty manuscripts from between the eighth to seventeenth century and it is the first major exhibition of Qurans in the USA. Students will be led through the exhibit with a guide, and learn how calligraphy and illumination played a significant role in the history of the arts of the book in the Islamic world. Students will also get to create an illuminated design of their own midway through the exhibit.

What Are We Learning This Unit?
Math
- I can tell and write time to the nearest minute.

- I can solve telling time word problems by adding and subtracting minutes.
- I can measure liquids and solids with grams, kilograms, and liters.
- I can use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to solve word problems about mass or volume.
- I can use place value to help me round numbers to nearest 10 to 100.
- I can quickly and easily add and subtract numbers within 1000.
English Language Arts
- I can use linking words (also, another, and, more, but, etc.) to connect the ideas in my writing.
- I can include illustrations in my writing to help others understand my topic better.
- I can use temporal words (first, next, then, finally, etc.) to help others understand the order in my stories.
- I can write organized stories that have lots of details.
- I can figure out the lessons or morals of the stories that I read and explain that message using details from the story.

Tajweed:

Memorization:
- Surat Al-Ghashiyah
- Some students will be working separately on Surahs At-Takweer and Al-Insaan
Tafsir:
- The general meaning for Surat Al-Ghashiyah
Islamic Studies
- We will be learning about belief in Allah, Prophets, the Books of Allah, Angels, the Final Day, and fate
- The family of Ibrahim and his migration to many different places
- The amazing story of Yusuf and his eleven brothers and how the children of Israel came to Egypt
- The story of Musa and the enslavement of the children of Israel
- Finally, we will look at the story of Isa
- We will also practice many of the daily duas
Art
- Identify different ways that artists express ideas in selected works of art from different times and cultures
- Discuss and compare how art from different times or cultures are similar or different
- Create artworks that use the elements of art and principle of design to express personal meaning
