The mission of Cedar Grove Elementary is to grow our students into respectful, curious and productive citizens.
School Violence Awareness Week
Creating Physically and Emotionally Safe Spaces
Throughout the month of October, our Proud Patriots will continue to discuss how to cultivate healthy peer relationships. This week, we will spotlight the tenets of a healthy school environment as part of School Violence Awareness.
School Violence Awareness is a week where we commit to physical and emotional safety in our schools. Each day we will highlight a characteristic of a healthy school environment -- Safety, Trustworthiness, Peer support, Collaboration and Empowerment.
The following thoughts of the day will be included in our daily morning announcements for the week of 10/17 - 10/21:
Monday, 10/17/22
Morning Announcement/Thought for the Day (read by a Gr. 5 Peer Leader): (Safety)
Safety is anything that people do to protect themselves or others from harm. Proud Patriots keep each other's feelings and bodies safe. We keep each other’s bodies safe when we walk calmly in the hallways, walk up and down the stairs one at a time, and play fairly on the playground with no rough play. We keep each other’s feelings safe when we use kind words with each other and we talk calmly even when we are mad. When Proud Patriots feel safe, we learn more and can have more fun together.
Tuesday, 10/18/22
Morning Announcement/Thought for the Day (read by a Gr.5 Peer Leader): (Trustworthiness)
Being trustworthy means --
- Doing what you say you will do.
- Doing the right thing even when it is not the easy choice.
- Being loyal to friends and family.
- Being honest all the time.
- Never cheating or stealing.
When we are trustworthy, others know they can count on us. Proud Patriots are trustworthy.
Wednesday, 10/19/22
Morning Announcement/Thought for the Day (read by a Gr. 5 Peer Leader): (Peer Support)
- Supporting each other is a key to good relationships both at school and in the world. Peer support is more than thinking and feeling positive about our friends. Peer support is our actions. It’s doing positive things for our friends.
- One way to support our friends is by listening. Proud Patriots who learn to listen, learn to understand. We learn how to support others in our lives.
- Proud Patriots are also supportive, when we have empathy and understand how others are thinking and feeling.
- Lastly, Proud Patriots show support to each other when we stand up for what’s right and act as an example for others.
Thursday, 10/20/22
Morning Announcement/Thought for the Day (read by a Gr.5 Peer Leader): (Collaboration)
Collaboration is a fancy way of saying working together as a team. When Proud Patriots collaborate, we:
- Listen carefully,
- Talk to each other in a respectful way,
- Talk out disagreements and
- Work together to solve problems.
- When students have good collaboration skills, they learn more and have more fun together. At Cedar Grove Elementary, we collaborate with each other because we are Proud Patriots!
Friday, 10/21/22
Morning Announcement/Thought for the Day (read by a Gr.5 Peer Leader): (Empowerment)
Empowerment means we get stronger and more confident each day. Our words have power and so do our actions. Proud Patriots can become more empowered when we:
- Try hard, even if we may fail at first
- Speak truthfully and kindly to others, especially when we are mad or upset
- Take on new challenges like learning our math facts or beginning a new sport
- Celebrate ourselves and each other when we are successful.
Proud Patriots are empowered.

2) Please label your child's belongings including coats, jackets, lunchboxes, water bottles, etc. We can ensure your child will be reunited with these items if they are labeled. We understand that when personal items are lost, they create an increased financial burden on your family. Please help us keep our "Lost and Found" bin empty!
Classroom Spotlight!
Mr. Frake's Grade Five Class
Mr. Frake shared a snapshot of this week's topics and activities:
This week we began learning about place value involving decimals. One way students can remember place value is to visualize them compared to a base ten block: A “one” looks like the shape of a piece of cheese. A ‘tenth” looks like a twizzler. A “hundredth” looks like a Chiclet. A “thousandth” looks like a Tic Tac. I explained to the students that it takes 10 Twizzlers to make a slice of cheese, which is a whole; ten Chiclets to make a Twizzler; and ten Tic Tacs to make a Chiclet. This visual representation has always helped my students see decimals a little clearer and be able to refer to them in an understandable way.
Every day we learn a new vocabulary word from a website called wordgenius.com. I have the students guess what the word means and then we discuss the word's meaning and use it in sentences. One word this week was withal. It simply means, in addition to, or also. The students found it funny that you could almost add the word withal on to any sentence, and it is funny to say. We have been using it all week.
In English Language Arts, students have been doing research on their names, writing personal narratives, and finished reading San Giving, a story about a Cuban boy who wanted to begin an American tradition of Thanksgiving and his family's unwillingness to lose their Cuban culture.
In Social Studies we began learning about the first people that were located in North and Central America. We viewed Google Earth and looked at where early people came from through Alaska and Central America. Google Earth is a great visual to get a realistic idea of our Earth. We began reading a legend about early Native People and where they settled across the United States.
Every day we watch CNN10 to keep up with current events. The students really enjoy this short and entertaining 10 minute video each day and look forward to the next day's news. The book fair, class pictures and Ice Cream social were fun events.
We also completed our owl pellet dissection as one culminating activity of our food chain unit. Owl pellets are what owls leave behind when they naturally can’t digest the hair and bones of what they have eaten. It is always a memorable day when we take apart owl pellets and find out what they have eaten and reconstruct that skeleton. Students I had over twenty years ago still remember the day they did this fun and educational activity with me in class.
Ice Cream Social was a Hit!
Thanks to all who made it a success...
