Facts on AIDS
-8 out of 10 children in the world with dead parents live in sub-Saharan Africa.
-The average life expectancy in sub-Saharan Africa is now 54.4 years and some of the most heavily affected countries there are below 49 years old.
-Around 360,000 children in sub-Saharan Africa became HIV infected in 2010 and the majority of them became infected during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding from the mother being affected with the virus.
-During 2011, an estimated 1.2 million adults and children died because of AIDS related-illnesses in sub-Saharan Africa.
-An estimated 22.9 million people are living with HIV in the region which is around 2/3 of the global total.
-Since the beginning of the epidemic, 14.8 million children have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS.
