Pine Class News Update

Rights and Responsibilities
Our study of community has lead to a focus on rights and responsibilities. We spent a lot of time out of the building this week, looking at what people were doing in the neighborhood. We talked about what people are allowed to do (rights) and what people should do to take care of the community (responsibilities.)
What do you think of our observations?
In the classroom
We also discussed responsibilities in our classroom community. One morning we talked about what children are responsible for in school and what children are responsible for at home. They mostly said they are responsible for doing what adults tell them to. We noticed a lack of awareness for self-starting responsibility in this discussion. We responded by making a list of all the ways children can help out in the classroom. We wrote these tasks on popsicle sticks and we encourage children to select one and work on it at free moments during the day.
What could you to help create awareness for your child about ways they can be responsible at home?
Field Trip
We are going to MoMA next Thursday. We are lucky enough to have the same museum educator at MoMA that we had at the Whitney last week! We will look at pieces that represent communities.
We will leave around 9:30. This time we will take a bus. Please try to pack a lunch, snack, and water bottle for your child.

Farm Stand
We really need more parent volunteers at the farm stand this coming Wednesday! A good volunteer will support the children to be very independent talking to customers and counting money. Our focus with the money is on doubles facts like 50 cents plus 50 cents equals $1. We are also teaching children to count up to make change for $2 out of $5, for example, but we are not expecting them to make change when the amount is not a whole number, like $2.50 out of $4, for example. Children are using the renkenrek to support their work with $10 and $20.
