What do I think Media is?
I think media consists of the various forms of mass communication used to deliver information from one source to the world and from the world into your home. Media is a crucial part of our society because without it, broadcasting or informing large masses of important news and desired topics would be very difficult, especially over long distances. We are dependent upon mass communication for knowing what is going on in our physical, social, economic, and political environments. In other words, almost everything we know about people, places, and events that we cannot experience first-hand comes from a form of media. We also rely heavily on media for entertainment and pleasure. With this reliance, there should also be understanding, which is what media literacy is. The media literate person understands the basics of various media, and enjoys their use in a consciously engaged way. The impact mass media has on society is that it can unconsciously shape our images of ourselves. Not only will media affect the way you see yourself, but, also the way you think about the things around you such as friends, family, and other public figures or ideas. A media literate person is able to access, analyze, and interpret the information before them.

Blockbuster with the Comeback

CHICAGO – Blockbuster Video has decided to try to step up to Redbox and Netflix by creating their own delivery and online system for rentals with a twist that is less than ideal.
Heading back to its origins, Blockbuster Video moves back to Chicago for good and has made even the online experience of streaming video a rental situation in which only a certain number of viewers may be allowed at a time. While many people were more surprised that Blockbuster was even able to resurface as a company at all, others had serious complaints about their limited video resources and poor selections.
“What’s Blockbuster?” was the most common response when our journalists surveyed a younger crowd of moviegoers while an older generation had this to say,” Oh, I have Netflix already.” It seems there may be no hope for the sinking ship of Blockbuster Video.
Land of the Free?
Lyrics:
Land of the free and we're united
Make our destiny, we take control. Yeah!
Never divided, we got the power
And we'll never be divided we fall. Oh yeah!
Land of the free, free to conspire, to control destiny. Oh yeah!
You're gonna see, no use resisting you live in the land of the free
Free to control your life
Land of the free
Free to control your mind
Land of the free
Land of the free (democracy), united nations of hypocrisy
Profit's our goal, we're incorporated
It's big business and oil companies controlling us all. Oh yeah!
Land of the free, free to conspire, to control destiny. Oh yeah!
You're gonna see, no use resisting you live in the land of the free
Free to control your life
Land of the free
Free to control your mind
Land of the free
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States Of Hypocrisy and to the republic for which it stand. One nation without liberty and justice for all.
Free to control your life
Land of the free
Free to control your mind
Land of the free
Free to control your life
Land of the free
Free to control your mind
Land of the free
Yeah right!
Reflection
While my views on how media is vital to the way our society operates have not changed, my ability to analyze information and interpret has increased immensely. I may not be a supercomputer, but looking back I can definitely see a difference in the way I would approach a topic too directly without an introduction to the ideas I was to present. I would give opinions without support and sources without citations which can lead to bad grades and overall poor understanding. Media Literacy was very different from any other language arts class that I’ve ever experienced. Take out all the essays and articles and there is a true sense of interest and collaboration within the class. With topics that relate to the world today and having to turn assignments in through the devices we use each and every day was a definite positive to the course. However, having access to these devices and using them daily doesn’t ensure that a student will take the time to perform a simple task such as turning in a homework assignment on time. I had fallen short to what I could’ve accomplished in class, and I know now that if I don’t change my habits, they definitely won’t change when I need them to stay successful wherever I may end up. Within my faults, I can also see where the course could improve as well. As a senior, I’m not very motivated to pay attention during class or sometimes even show up but understanding that people love to receive recognition, I feel that the most notable or impressive of each assignment should be read aloud in order to give some students a sense of accomplishment. Not only will this give the student who had done an exceptional job on the assignment pure gratitude, it could possibly influence the students around them to make connections between styles of writing and develop instead of tuning out to the sound of an educator which may be amazingly qualified, but twelve years too repetitive for our minds to stay focused.
